From a purely dramatic point of view, what a beautiful game. A literary genius could only have made it better by having us lose like this in the last game of Euro 2004, not this early into it.
Exult in your existence, because that very process has blundered unwittingly on its own negation. Only a small, local negation, to be sure: only one species, and only a minority of that species; but there lies hope. [...] Stand tall, Bipedal Ape. The shark may outswim you, the cheetah outrun you, the swift outfly you, the capuchin outclimb you, the elephant outpower you, the redwood outlast you. But you have the biggest gifts of all: the gift of understanding the ruthlessly cruel process that gave us all existence [and the] gift of revulsion against its implications.

Why is it all the self-proclaimed intellectuals hate life so much? They spend so much time in their own little world they fail to realise the fun that can be had.
It's called existentialism. All the best (French) philosophers use it jk.

And @ Whaleboy in this thread. You rock, man
        Thankyou kindly!

Then you can join him in this black-matt painted bedroom and tell each other how different and profound they are....
Lime green and covered in Led Zeppelin prints thankyou very much

i suppose that it would have been a great match to watch if I had not been English. But, look at it this way: Rooney is going to be worth so much Everton could by a new team and write off their debt at the same time.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

he's confusing pomposity with intellect, a common problem with pseudos................
Now now, a misguided feeling of superiority never harmed anyone

My mother had just purchased a summer house in France back in '91-92 something. There was an important football game where Sweden beat France (was it the WC qualification, can't remember?). My mother watched it with her older sister and her new neighbour, a retired gendarme from Paris who commented "Sweden defended well". Then the two old ladies (60-70 years old back then) sat in their Austin Mini and drove around town, honked and waved a Swedish flag out the window!!!! What a sight that must have been!
              Ok that's beautiful!!

                what's so good about that?

It's refreshing to find a self-hating Englishman, for a change

Really, I think Whaleboy helps giving a great tone to the thread, as the nationalists enrage, and the others can smile

I am annoyed, and I am not a nationalist, certainly not an english one.

What is there to smile about? " I am such a cool individualist, and I don't give a **** about the people who surround me"?

Well Rooney has a broken Metatarsal (sp) so wouldn't have played again anyway.

It doesn't matter whether or not England played well or who played better, England did enough to go through and it's only through appalingly homebiased referring that England aren't through.
                      Are we having fun yet?

I think even an Englishman would have considered the great to watch, until the very last English shot.

Those that don't appreciate the fine art of self-destruction . Seriously I care about the people around me, myself and my endeavors and that is literally it.

Come on, give it a break. There were far worse referees in this cup (ask Italians and especially Latvians!) Referees in general are very quick giving a foul for the goalkeeper in the 5m-room and Ricardo certainly was slightly held. I'd like to see refs letting play a biot harder there, but this a general objection.
England is out because Rooney got hurt and Becks is a loser.
