In my country, if a guy who's 18 has sex with a girl younger than 16, that's a criminal act. And that's damn right. I in no way think that most 14 olds can decide whether they want to have sex. They are not that mature - they may at times act like such, but they are in fact immature, and will go for it to have an "adventure". While I know for a fact that the overwhelming majority of girls who have sex at 14 or 15 regret it afterwards. Mind you, I don't even want to think about cases where the young girls get pregnant, that's completely terrible.

Now, if the guy's 18 and the girl's 17.... it's fine. I guess they both can think for themselves. At 17, the girl, unless completely dumb, should very well be understanding what she's doing.

And of course, murder is worse than having sex with a teenager. Murder is, under usual circumstances, the worst crime.

No I think it's quite wrong, and it's quite wrong to charge someone who's equally young and unresponsible (the 18 yr old) with a serious sex crime like statutory rape over a two or four year age difference. Essentially they're equals in terms of maturity/psychological standard.

In the state of Michigan, such a crime will land you on a permanent sex offender list grouped with the likes of rapists, molesters, and assorted scum.

The fact that the law assigns these arbitrary numbers for age of consent, and then assigns the crime of rape if you cross that line, is bogus and hypocritical. I'm not advocating it or apologizing for it, but the law is seriously f*cked up when it comes to this.

That's another problem I have- it seeks to encourage a young man's friends/peer group to discourage or chastise the behavior when the fact is that guys generally don't nose around in their friend's relationships when it comes to stuff like this. I can't visualize a guy's buddy coming up to him and saying "hey yo, ain't she too young for you". Just not gonna happen...

You people are generalising a hell of a lot. Whether or not you are capable of deciding is a matter of individual disposition, not state-imposed limits and lines in the sand, nor is there a biological or psychological limit, otherwise we'd all start puberty and reach mental and physical sexual maturity at the same point. We can't judge it in such general terms in my opinion. Is it ok to sleep with a given 15 year old as opposed to 8 year old? Which is more likely to be able to make that decision? Fundamentally, it's not rape if the female gives consent, and is able to do so and take responsibility for it, so that is the only issue at stake here, at what age one is capable of making that decision. I dont think anyone is capable of defining that except the girl, her doctors and possibly shrinks. Family ideally but who wants to admit that their teenage daughter is apt for penetration?
