    • The problem is that if I register to vote then I might be considered a resident of Canada by Revenue Canada. That would mean I have to pay Canadian taxes on my Hong Kong income.

        • Hmmh, maybe I should look into voting, but I'm really concerned about getting taxed. If I had to pay Canadian income tax on my earnings for the past seven years, I'd be bankrupt.

          • If you were a resident of HK then you don't owe any Canadian taxes on HK earnings.

It's not clear cut. Must of us would assume that if we're not residing in Canada then we're not a resident, but we're dealing with the government.

There is no specific legal definition of a resident. You can be considered a resident if you have "social ties with Canada (such as memberships in Canadian recreational and religious organizations), a Canadian passport, memberships in Canadian unions or professional organizations, a driver's license from a province or territory of Canada.

I talked to a Revenue Canada guy I knew in Penticton and he says not to worry, the government wouldn't care about a small fry like me, but then he said I wouldn't really know until I filed my first income tax when I returned.

Ironic, but that is the sin bin reaction in action when accompanied by gross misconduct.
That's exactly what I'm seeing from the Liberal campaign. It's been an absolute train-wreck. Martin's been behind Harper on every policy announcement, and can't seem to articulate any reason for Canadians to vote for him without resorting to saying that the Conservatives will be bad for Canada. That just feeds back into Harper's momentum since he's been staying away from the "flag-wrapping" and condemning Martin for doing so. The debate tomorrow may tell the tale; Martin's going to need an outstanding performance to pull out of his slide.

I don't think Chretien could've done this any better if he'd actually planned it -- leave behind the one poision pill and watch it rot away all of Martin's election chances. (Wasn't the A-G's sponsorship report originally supposed to be released in November, but got delayed when Chretien prorogued Parliament? Maybe Chretien did plan this thing out after all...)

Now if Harper could just muzzle his wingnuts.

I think Harper shot himself in the foot. He made too many promises. People are moving away from Conservatives. Their support has peaked, and its below the combined support given to the Alliance/PC in the last election (31% now compared to a combined 37% in 2000).

New numbers based on CTV poll: http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...hub=TopStories

In BC, Harper has really blown it. The Alliance/PC took 57% of the vote in 2000. The Conservatives are now only polling 34%. Same story in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. In Ontario, the Conservatives haven't made any gains.

The Conservatives should be doing a lot better, but they've hit a wall.

The Liberals are losing strength with each passing day because Martin is just offering the same old promises.

The NDP now have a chance to charge up the middle, but the question is whether they will see their opportunity. They need to shift into high gear. If each NDP supporter can get one person to switch to the NDP then they can win the election.

With the Conservatives stagnating and the Liberals in decline, the possibility is real for an NDP election win.

Outside of Toronto (22 seats) the Liberals are in very serious trouble in Ontario.

That is dreaming in colour. Have you considered the nightmare scenario for the NDP? If this becomes a two party race the NDP runs the risk of being squeezed severely.....

Regardless, the NDP will not form a government b/c they will need huge seat totals in Ontario. With the legacy of Bob Rae the NDP will be hard pressed to gather any significant seats here.

The thread (long as it is) was interesting in that the evolution of the campaign can be seen in the posts..
