SO YEAH LETS DO NOTHING as the illogical peacenik says. Maybe once Al Qaeda kills somebody you know, you will finally get it in your head that we have to go after al qaeda and kill them all.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

    • Judging by his last post Sikander does not need Al Queda's assistance to think daft and twisted thoughts, Oedo.

He can manage that all by himself.

      • There's nothing I can say about the act itself; it doesn't surprise me, but it's too much, too revolting, for someone distanced from the act, like myself, to rightly describe. The action speaks for itself more than any outrage I can show or even affect. What can any of us say? There is no shame more degrading to humanity than "patriotism" like this...

But talking about nuking is a bit much even in jest. These people just sent one innocent civilian to a gruesome death. Nuclear weapons send thousands of innocent civilians to a gruesome death and leave thousands more wasting away in sickness. Let's keep some perspective.

Only the US feels that way. Asia, Africa, South America and even Europe aren't considering the destruction of the Arab world. Nor do they consider they have to change it fundamentally from their fancy far-off capitol...

              • One would hope that it would be clear, given the concepts of responsibility and crime that one crime can never excuse another crime-nothing the US ever did can excuse this murder, just as nothing anyone else did can excuse prisoner abuse by US servicepeople. One would hope sucha simple outocme of those terms would be self-evident. This thread shows it is self evident that it is not.

As for outrage. I have no canned outrage for this, nor have I really had much canned outrage for the prisoner scandal- the scandal comes from a pattern in our current leadership and that permeates down the line, even if not ordered down the line.

As for this murder-the men who committed it are criminals, nothing else. BUt I can't really get more worked up over the killing of one man, even if American, than the murders of dozens. I doubt those Iraqis killed by these guys car bombs suffered much less, depending on how the bombs killed them. These guys have already killed hundreds-I can't get worked up over 1 more. Even if he were an American: Maybe I missed it coming into being, butif a thread was made on the assasination of the Chechen president I missed it. 20 people were killed. Why were their deaths less outrageous, or at least less worthy of long discussion?

Re the Chechen president: you don't understand, the 20 dead are colateral damage, so it was perfectly ok to kill them

Where was the outrage from the West when civilian casualties where shown on Mid East TV?

I cannot cheer any violation of human life.

But I am not surprised that what has been going around the Mid East for decades in the cause of democracy is finally being done to innocent US citizens.

Don't be so surprised, folks. This has been in the pipeline for a long time...

I would really like to believe this, but it is getting harder and harder. Looking at the facts that continue to emerge from that society it appears that oppression and violence are very ingrained.

I had hoped that the opportunity of setting up the first real democratic government in the ME might help, but the reaction of the radicals to the possibility of freedom is dimming this hope.

With the stated goals of the wahhabist to eithier convert us or kill us, it appears that the only viable alternative to long term violence is a period of intense warfare.

To all those that say that a peaceful solution must be found, I submit to you that both sides must want peace. I am convinced that the radical elements that are dominating ME society wouldn't play.

Sikander and Plato are normally reasonable guys. I expect them to stop thinking this once they are over the shock.
Thanks for that Spiffor. The problem is that it is becoming "getting over" one shock after another. At some point something must be done to stop the cycle. Peace would be great, but I no longer believe that is possible with the terrorist. I don't think they want peace. This leaves only one alternative...they must be destroyed.

                          • I think we need to keep things in their proper perspective. What we did to the prisoners in Abu Ghraib was inapropriate and wrong, but the beheading of this american is far far worse. And you don't see the terrorists apologizing or creating committees to find out what Bin Laden knew and when and if he should resign over this scandal. That's a difference between us and the terrorist. When we do something wrong, we apologize and punish the responsible. On the other hand, the terrorist actually think they are going to heaven and having sex with 70 virgins when they mutilate and kill an american.

In fact, I think our government goes overboard with the self-flagellation. As soon as there is even an allegation of inpropriety, we just love to create commissions and investigations to find someone to blame and tar and feather.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

Nah, a better solution is leave 'em the **** alone. The whole region is obviously spiraling into chaos and madness, and they'll do far more damage to one another than any nuke could.
