Fulfilling their role? Almost every single question was basically "when will you admit you are incompetent?","when will you apologize for being incompetent?","when will you admit you failed?" etc etc...

That's the role of the press? To attack the president? I thought the role of the press was to seek the truth?

Sure a president can look bad or look good based on how he chooses to answer questions, but the press sure did their best to make Bush look bad.
'There is a greater darkness than the one we fight. It is the darkness of the soul that has lost its way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities, it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender. The future is all around us, waiting, in moments of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only that it is always born in pain.'"

NO ONE AKSED ANY OF THOSE QUESTION! So first, stop lying.

So if a press person asks: (and this was the very question): there have been criticism of your administration that you do not admit mistakes (this criticism does exits), do you think them valid? That question seeks to get the opinion of the president on a common criticism against him, which is exactly the sort of questions presidents have ALWAYS gotten at their own press conferences. You know what, Bush could have said: NO, it's not a fair criticism, if we are wrong, we amdit it, and have been done with it. That he did not answer the question is his fault.

Sure a president can look bad or look good based on how he chooses to answer questions, but the press sure did their best to make Bush look bad.
NO. The press asked hard questions, sure, they were not friendly, but the guy already has unlimited timw to answer, so why should the press simply lob him softballs? For that he might as well have Cheney asking. NO, the press goes in becuase this is the one time they get to ask him anything. Only Bush can look bad. A good president would have made himslef look the poor victim of a vendictive press. Bush didn;t even pull that one off-and again, that is his fault.

The left here are ignorant, and only want to think Bush look bad because they hate him. That's all.

The question is how to do it in a way that still engages the media and in the end leaves the reporters either on your side, or at least confused.

Reagan gave VERY FEW press conferences, but he was god at doing both things, specially the confusing one. BUsh the elder was OK at the first one, though dry and never came of as very likeable. Too cold. Clinton was a master at it. You gave slick willy a question, he would repeat it, rephrase it in a subtle but important way, then give an answer that was party valid to the original question, but really more pertinent to HIS new version of the question.

How could Bush have done so with the question I mentioned?

                  Let's try-this is my attempt:

I know there is this criticism that we don;t back down from our policies, and you know, I think that is correct-we do stick to our policies. NOw, the informaion we were given is not always fully correct, and perhaps here or there someone runs with the information we have at hand and may speak before all the facts are in, but in the end, we do stick to our policy becuase we believe it's the right policy, and now the people of Iraq ..... and whatever.
I was thinking the same thing as I was watching him. He just didn't give a straight answer. I suppose that's just too much to ask from any politician eh?

No one wants a straight answer. The press may find them boring to report (what's the angle?)-the Public is uncomfortable with people not playing their role (which is not supposed to be brutally honest), and the politicians have nothing to gain.

It is a question of good answers- answres that are a little informative, a little witty if you can but at least from the politician's viewpoint, and after all the president is the one who set this up, one that sells your message subtly-so people think you did answer, and you got the message accross.

Bush here was in full "sell message" mode, BUT he tried to do it without really taking into account the questions, whih is why he looked bad.

Oh, and I am confident you have made mistakes too

I could have sworn he said secretary of state Rumsfeld.

Did he say whether the timetable for the re-establishment of a government in Iraq will be adhered to and whether US troops will continue in a peacekeeping role if an incoming Iraqi government so requests?

And did anyone ask him what he will do if the Ba'ath party wins the election?
