    Population-wise, that is.

In terms of land area, the world's largest nation is the Russian Federation, the second-largest is Canada and the third-largest is China.
China and India are the local superpowers in the region but they aren't global superpowers as they can't really project their forces like the US.

    • [nitpick]Wouldn't being a "local superpower" just make them a power? Or a regional power?[/nitpick]

That's not a nitpick because it is proper in saying local superpower. Idiot.

Ok, so because you have the largest economy, you basically get to do whatever the heck you feel like. Likewise, since Russia has the most land, they can probably get away with a thing or two also, and since China has the most people, they can push a few "lesser" nations around when they want to. Israel is another nations that's a little "more equal than others", so they should be free to act as they see fit, and Norway has the world's highest percentage of Norwegians, etc., etc., etc...

China and India are the local superpowers in the region but they aren't global superpowers as they can't really project their forces like the US.
They're working on it though... China already has the ability to nuke the US West Coast. Does that give them the right to decide what kind of government Japan should have?

            • So, Saddam said he didn't have WMD and didn't. Gaddafi shows he has weapons of mass distruction, admits to having supported terrorists, still runs a brutal dictatorship very similar to the one that was in Iraq last year, but feels repetent on the first 2 issues. He is now "a valuble ally".

Is this Christian forgiveness on the part of Blair & Bush or are they once again showing themselves to be oppertunists who decide for there citizens which dictators are good and which are bad ?

Yup. Money is what makes this world go around. Take it or leave it.

Not relevant as Japan is the second largest economy in the world.

Actually, the US won the cold war with borrowed money and still has a bit of a deficit in various accounts...

                  But they don't have nukes.
If China threatens Japan with nukes, are the Japanese supposed to point their noses and say it's not relevant because they have more money? Come on, get real...

That still proves money is what makes the world go around.

The Japanese could send troops and launch an invasion. Lets get real, it isn't in China's interest to mess with Japan as it does a lot of trading with Japan, nor should it mess with the US for that same reason.

                    • I think the point is not whether or not China, Japan, India, the Russian Federation, and U.S. have the power to make policy in other countries. It's whether or not they have the right. THE RIGHT.

                      To me they don't.

                        Yes, it does.
Theoretically, the rest of the world could get tough and demand their money back. (The US still owes a hell of a lot of money.) Also, theoretically, the US could say "screw you" and simply keep the money.

In reality, neither of these things actually happen because they are in no one's best interest. Everyone seems to think they're better off just letting things slide - and they're probably right. -At least for the time being...

The Japanese could send troops and launch an invasion.

Some 70 years ago, perhaps (and yes, they actually did just that), but given today's balance of power that's actually a lot like suggesting Cuba could invade the US!

I agree. But then it's not in America's best interest to piss off half the world either, is it?
