Why, Imran, how modest of you!

Who knew that your fans crossed gender and sexuality divides?

Anyways, I think you're being an unreconstructed male chauvinist- if you can have polygamy then why not polyandry too? It does take place in several cultures across the globe.

Although why any sensible heterosexual woman would want more than one husband is beyond me. Imagine, two people not taking out the rubbish, or leaving half-eaten takeaways in the refrigerator, or twice the number of people watching golf or football on television when you want to watch that Susan Hayward film....

I may be wrong, but I think those people saying polygamy are not using the word in its "many women" sense but rather its "many marriages" sense. Hence making a point of saying Polyandry is little more than semantics.

I don't think so- Imran's a Muslim and familiar with polygamy, and in the Christianized United States, the Mormons are the main representatives of those who practise/d polygamy. In the Judaeo-Christian and Islamic worlds, multiple wives and concubines have been a feature common to all three monotheistic faiths.

Polyandry is less common, and more associated with 'tribal' cultures, but I suspect people rarely consider that a woman might want or have more than one husband.

I guess I figured if people are liberal enough to 'allow' homosexual marriage then male-female equality was a given.

I was speaking about first hand experience in Utah, but my use (and understanding) of the term polygamy was "many marriages". I wasn't even aware of the term polyandry before now, and have always interpreted polygamy as a term irregardless of the gender composition of the married group.

Molly, poly-gamy means many spouses. Poly-gyny specifically refers to many wives. You seem to know what poly-andry means.

Something like that, anyways, I would have put that in the poll but I thought polyandry meant multiple relationship not in relation to marriage opposite of monoganous relationships. My bad. I guess women could want mulitiple husbands to help support them or something. Please lets not kill each other over semantics.

Why not? It's as good as any other reason to kill someone.
