  • Does a single person here find this racist? My rant on my sociology class

My proffesor in my sociology class, a class of roughly 100 people, the proffesor and the 4 TA's decided to not do anything productive today and lecture about racism....

When we started the class he asked us to all close our eyes and think about the word cannibal, what was the first thing that came to mind? For me I was thinking about some pristine beach in the south pacific.....

We rescently had a quiz and one person was ill-prepared for it and BS'ed their way through it, at the end of the quiz they threw in a joke that had slight connections to the topic of the essay, the joke is as follows:

There are three explorers exploring when suddenly.........

    The natives capture them.

The chief gives them the choice of either death, or "Bunga-bunga".

These guys don't have clue what bunga-bunga is, but it's got to be better than death, so the first chap says "Bunga-bunga"

So be it says the chief.

100 hung natives line up & sodomize the poor guy one after another.

2nd guy says, "well--it don't look like fun, but at least I'll still be alive in the end, so bunga-bunga it is" and he gets the same treatment.

3rd guy looks at his two mates writhing on the ground, and bravely tells the chief he prefers death.

"Very well" the chief says, "Death............ by bunga-bunga"

Now the TA who graded this was black, and OBVIOUSLY this is a racist joke, so we have an hour long lecture about how racist our society is. The TA's all gutlessly agree with the proffesor. The collective class murmurs, apparently no one saw this as racist. The proffesor called for anyone who thought this wasent racist, about thirty people were willing speak up, and claim it was not-from the murmurs going on in the rest of the classroom it seemed everyone else agreed. Six of the people who challenged the proffesors claim were black.

*sigh* I'm just generally pissed off as our white proffesor is trying to convince his class that they are racists if they dont think that statement is racists....

I still fail to see how the joke is racist, is it somehow insinuating "All black people are cannibals"?

There were/are black people who are cannibals. How does this joke proove to be racist anyway....

Your thoughts? Does a single person here find this racist?

    /rant

Edit: I think my favorite part may be when one student asked if they were being over sensitive, that the joke wasent meant to be racist, and the student who wrote it, seemingly like all in attendence saw no racial connection...

The TA's response: It dosent matter if it was intended as racist or not, it is. It dosent matter if you intend something to be racist, that is for the victim to decide.

    Dictionary.com's defenition of racism:

"The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others."

        not racist.

I'm sure some here will want you to pay reparations for this joke though.

It's amazing how many people feel this way. If anyone is being racist it is your TA and/or professor for attempting to take a joke and turn it into a racial issue.

          Racism exists everywhere.

I think anyone who says they have never entertained those kind of thoughts is lying.

Parents are usually responsible for handing down ugly racial myths and stereotypes.

Which is like pretending that 'natives' and 'bunga-bunga' are valueless or value free words and terms.

Given the history of colonialism and conquest they're not, but the intent of the person writing should also be considered.

There's a difference between racism, chauvinism, Nazism, whatever, and thoughtlessness.

Noone regularly associates cannibalism with Western Europe, say, because it ceased to be a regular social activity there in pre-Classical times. However there are accounts of cannibalism from the era of the Black Death in the 14th Century, and from the Thirty Years' War.

So, cannibalism is something that Western societies associate with extreme situations, or more 'primitive' non-European cultures, such as pre-Christian Fiji, the Kwakiutl of north-western Canada, some African peoples (allegedly) and Meso-American cultures.

We see it as tabu, but Westerners have resorted to it, the Donner Party being a case in point, and the plane crash in the Andes being another.

                /me shakes head.

This kind of thinking is very prevalent nowadays in universities, particularly in lower-level undergrad classes.

Later on, you will find professors who insist, that you must always try to understand the author in order to understand what there work means. In other words, intent is the only thing of value, and not your own particular conceptions.

For example, Joseph Conrad has a character who calls blacks ******s. Does this make him a racist? Not necessarily, because the character is held up to be morally corrupt, and this is one aspect of that character. Another, much better critique, argues that Conrad lambasts the supposedly civilised Europeans, just as much as the Africans.

What a dumb statement. Say a white person passed over because of an Affirmative Action program believes that AA is racist, does that mean the people implimenting the program are racist against whites? After all the white person passed over was a 'victim'.
