Come to think of it, Taiwan almost sounds like China's version of America's Cuba — a thorn in its side in terms of how it's governed.

I wouldn't count on it. If the Chinese leadership were to say, "How many cities are you willing to lose for Taiwan? We're willing to lose three or four ..." then it's over for Taiwan. No president will trade Honolulu and/or Los Angeles for Taipei.

Besides, the business community has too much invested in China to let Bush and those neocons get too hot about Taiwan. What would probably happen is China would offer some economic concessions (maybe letting their currency rise) and abandon North Korea to the US in exchange for the US backing off.

Can someone explain to me why we care about Taiwan in the first place?

            It's a matter of principle.

It has to do with the relationship between Taiwan, as the haven for the Nationalist Kuomintang.

The US has promised to defend China ie, Taiwan, from the Communist oppressors.

At least we don't claim to be the defenders of freedom and democracy, all the while trying to take it away from others just because they choose a different path to it

The US has around half a million more prisoners than China, which has four times the population. This is perhaps because in China they do not imprision the same amount of non-violent offenders, which in the US makes up around 70% of the incarcerated.

Surely you don't want me to regurgitate the list of US atrocities?

No need to turn this into a useless US vs. USSR thread.

But what if the United States responds with "If we lose one city, then you lose IT ALL." Turn it around - is Taiwan worth China ceasing to exist? And there's no question - if China destroyed Honololu or LA, the US would bomb China back to the LITERAL stone age.
