Soooooo....who's for the death penalty?
This is reason number 3 why I oppose the death penalty. The first is that it doesn't reduce crime; the second that too many innocent people have been on death row to justify keeping it.
The third is that it makes us worse people. If you've ever seen the disgusting spectacle of people barbecuing and hollering outside a prison on the day of execution, you will know what I mean. The death penalty appeals to a pre-rational sense of vengeance and indulges our love of cruelty. While I don't really care what happens to psychopathic monsters, a society that treats the deaths of its criminals as an occasion for a party is deeply sick. It's not much better than the baying mobs who attended mediaeval hangings. The same goes for media reporting of such crimes, which could fairly be described as pornographic. For the families and friends of the victims, it is natural to want to grind the perpetrator into the dirt, but that's an urge we should all resist – it doesn't make us look good, or better people, and it is an addictive kind of violence. That's why the justice system should be strict and impartial – it prevents our natural desire for cruelty and vengeance from making us worse people.
There are plenty of other outlets for our natural brutality: spectator sports, television and the print media. Why allow people's animalistic joy in cruelty to their fellows corrupt the justice system?

At least twice a year we get a story like this- there is always some child being murdered..
at this point it amazes me the same level of emotion comes up each time we go over this again and again
Be glad people (still) do, empathy in cases* like this would be far worse IMHO
* Haven't read the story yet but can imagine it somewhat
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?
Then why call him God? - Epicurus

Just out of curiosity, was anything sexual involved? The story just mentions a murder and then take anothers two pages to add nothing substantial.
I'd bet a small some of money that it was a sexual crime. These sorts of things always are. Perhaps he didn't have sex with her, but the basis of the crime is still sexual.
I'm guessing he either killed her to shut her up, or he has a sex thing about death.
The worst thing is that nobody can do anything that will ever compensate for this girls murder. Life is harsh.
ME! ME! ME! Fry the bastard. The scum should be eliminated from the Earth. He has nothing to offer society.

Hmm, the opposite amazes me.
Which side are we on? We're on the side of the demons, Chief. We are evil men in the gardens of paradise, sent by the forces of death to spread devastation and destruction wherever we go. I'm surprised you didn't know that. --Saul Tigh
