I saw part of Dean's post-primary speech.

After every statement, he said "WE WILL!" Anyone found that to be overly redundant?

That is the way a WASP preaches. Black preachers do the same thing but they have rhythm.

When the Democratic WASPs start preaching you know they are in trouble. It is more interesting to watch Bill Clinton light a cigar than listening to any of these guys.

Speaking of Clinton I read that during his entire presidency he only sent two emails and one was a test. There is probably a message in there somewhere but I'll be damned if I know what it is.

If Dean had been really smart he would have duplicated his performance from Iowa tonight. It would have stolen the night away from Kerry and most of the upcoming week as well.

Sometimes the best thing to do with negative publicity is to turn it into a strength. Is Dean too angry? Show how the others are complacent with the status quo. Show some passion. Show another YAAAARRRGGH!

Standing seems to in fashion with these Democratics. Dean likes to "stand up to George Bush". Lurch wants us to "stand with him". Lieberman says that we know "where he stands on the issues". I really think Joe ought to step off those issues. He insists that he doesn't "flip-flop on the issues". Just step off Joe.

Clark is "fighting for America". Lurch has "just begun to fight". Edwards looks like he would cry if you just made a fist at him.

Everyone is after those special interests.

Edwards is threatening to get rid of one of our Americas. I think he has a mind to secede down in South Carolina this week. Seriously, he is gonna get rid of the America that has special schools and health care. I think. Anyway he says it doesn't have to be that way. And he is such a nice young boy.

Al Sharpton is polling at 15% in South Carolina. They let Republican vote there, its an open primary. I might just drive down and vote for Al. You know what they say, once you go black, you never go back.

I kinda also like the fact that Kerry for President website has a forum where you have Republicans, Independants, and lefty Dems posting (though by far outnumbered by Kerry fans). I'm not sure how the moderation is there... but I find it refreshingly open.

Yeah, I think so too. Plus, you can look for a bigger turnout this time around which should help kerry out regardless of region. The country's never been more divided about a current prez.

Interesting questions. The primaries and general are separate issues. I don't know how the democratic primaries really work -- i.e., what makes a winning strategy. Dean doesn't look too good right now, but on the other hand he did get a fairly strong 2nd in New Hampshire, which is a sign of some strength. I wouldn't be surprised to see him regain some momentum.

Normally, the general election is about coalition-building. So you have to look at the votes that each VP candidate can bring to your ticket. I don't know what Edwards would bring to the coalition in the general election -- who does he represent? What groups can he deliver at the polls? Are these groups already covered by Kerry? At this point, I don't think we know, since this is his first campaign and it's so early anyway. If you had Gephardt as VP, for instance, you would know that he could deliver labor and could influence the gun rack union members, who are currently in play.

I think Edwards would be a heck of a choice. He's much better in person, where he is almost a pied piper. I think as a veep you stick him in a few targeted southern states and give him that six months to work his magic. The Carolinas have lost 400000 jobs between them and would be in play. W VA is usually democratic -- it took Gore's incompetence to lose it. FL and LA are usually competitive for dems. The corroloary to the truism that dems have trouble winning in the South is that the republicans can't afford to lose a single one of those states.

I agree that Edwards should perform well in the South, but do we really know if he will be good yet? Let's see if he can bring in some Southern votes in the next couple of weeks -- especially any indications of crossover/independent appeal that he might have. I hear that he's putting solid money into South Carolina, so that should prove a good test.

As for the general election, at least South Carolina is a parallel political universe where I don't know how a democrat could do well, even with unanimity in the black vote. Did you see the debates in the last Senate race? It was a footrace to show who was the most radically conservative and who could best reject northern liberal politics. These are hard core folks.

Btw, I agree with your corollary. On a values basis, the country is split right down the middle. We'll see how much of a values election this turns out to be.
