He'd be mad to take it on at the moment as captain-coach. Hiding to nothing. I read somewhere today that one of the other club coaches was talked about as a candidate. So who's your tip? And what's the gossip?

    London Wasps. Dally’s mob.
    Say no more.

They couldn’t be shown live??? Only soccer has such stupid restrictions surely?
FoxSports has the live broadcast rights to S12 matches played here. There is "anti-siphoning" legislation that prevents cable tying up exclusive broadcast rights to particular sports - supposedly protecting the viewing public from having to pay to watch a sport; in fact, protecting the free-to-air broadcasters from losing coverage. But S12 arrived after the legislation was enacted - and the designated sports listed - thus it's not covered by the legislation.

7 had the rights to live broadcasts of S12 matches played outside Australia, but the time differences for night games - even for New Zealand - made it uneconomical according to 7.

BTW, is this the longest temporary thread in the history of temporary threads?

    • It could be a contender

My tip is that they will appoint a Kiwi coach - taking one off of a franchise side after S12 wraps up this year. What do you reckon to that idea?

Rumours include the one that Martin feels it is too early for him to want to take it on, John Wells (the Head coach who looks mainly after the forwards) may not want the bigger chair, and that Tigers fans dread the idea we may end up with Mallinder (currently with Sale). The concept of a Kiwi doing it keeps getting mentioned too hence my 'hot tip'.

      • I think J**** would be mad for two main reasons: (1) the club is in a period of transition with a chance of things getting worse before they get better and who needs that sh*t in their first coaching outing?; and (2) regardless of his professionalism, the transition from player to player-coach of a squad is a very, very difficult one to pull off.

A current Kiwi S12 coach? Who? Blues - Peter Sloane; Crusaders - Robbie Deans; Chiefs - Ian Foster; Hurricanes - Colin Cooper; Highlanders - Greg Cooper.

Oh, but don't forget Rudolf Straeuli is available.

Thank you. I now have the image of a naked J**** blowing up a can of Tetley's at gunpoint in my mind.

Off the top of my head, no.
I can think of a great C4 sitcom in "Father Ted" though.
I can also think of great U.S.A sitcoms that are well known in England such as "Frasier."
Is this strange? It was an immediate thought. I think that "Coronation St." has moments that are truly great and are more sitcom than soap.

Mitchell is on the support staff at chiefs isn’t he? Or is that just the Waikato side outside the franchise? Regardless his name is strongly linked – and of course he has worked with Martin before and is respected by him.

The other name in the mix is Pat Howard – how about that then? Return of the prodigal?

Oh, but don't forget Rudolf Straeuli is available.
Don’t even joke about it! I saw what he did to Cardiff before he turned his attention to ruining the Boks as a world class side.

On which note how deep is the crisis in RSA – when 25 year old players are leaving for Japanese contracts it would seem they are in deep deep trouble?

Is this strange? It was an immediate thought. I think that "Coronation St." has moments that are truly great and are more sitcom than soap.
That show is more sitcom than soap and has been for a long time.

Father Ted is an absolute classic – good call. I quite like that one with Bill Bailey in it too – ‘Blacks books’ is it? Some of what C4 try to pull off is dire though – the Book Group springs to mind.

And they do get the best of US sitcom TV – though Sky give me access to that via the various channels anyway.

I wonder what Finbar thinks of Friends – there is no doubt in my mind that there are some terrific writers attached to it – but at times it feels ‘over written’. Too many writers on the creative team perhaps?

Was there a queue for the passes?
Only if they mistook it for the Beer queue.

*Edit* As you should all know by now Tigers have a tradition of not citing for foul play after games. Wasps seemingly have a very different policy. As can be seen here

One of the players cited, Freshwater, was at Tigers for ten years and is definitely not a dirty player IMO. 12 citings? French sides can be physcial and they do have a penchant for gouging (something I really detest) but my instincts are screaming that this cannot be right?

And I guess it's natural so many are being linked - it is after all the top club coaching role in the UK.

Mitchell's coaching Waikato in the NPC. He signed a three year contract.

Now du Pleiss has quit as a director of the SA Rugby Board too. He was highly thought of outside SA. Deep, deep trouble over there, I think.

Father Ted is an absolute classic – good call.
I gave "Father Ted" quite a few chances and couldn't get into it. Basically music hall Irish slapstick. Sorry.

I quite like that one with Bill Bailey in it too – ‘Blacks books’ is it?
Yes, with Dylan Moran, whom I think is t'riffic. Wonderful series, particularly when it trod the surreal path. Oddly enough, it was co-written by the chap who co-created and co-wrote "Father Ted". Which only goes to prove that everyone has a ****e series in them somewhere.

Some of what C4 try to pull off is dire though – the Book Group springs to mind.
Well, there you go. I loved "The Book Group".

I've never got as much as a smile out of it. I think it's classic slick American sitcom that relies on clever marketing more than good writing to achieve what it does.

Mmmmm. You have to wonder what the ref and the touchies were doing during all this supposed carnage. The pertinent point could be that Wasps copped two cards and Perpignan seem - according to the report - not to have copped any. Perhaps Wasps are staging some sort of protest against the ref via citing.

Don't know Mallinder. Nick Mallett is supposed to be okay. He was dudded by the Boks.

Waikato in the NPC is the level below S12 then. And an NPC contract would be no barrier to us if we really wanted him I suspect.

I think we could do a lot worse than a Mitchell-Howard setup (the latter as backs coach if he doesn’t feel ready for the full job).

Mallinder is the incumbent at Sale and has done a reasonable job there – but he has had harsh things to say about Tigers in the past and unlikely to be a popular choice with the fans.

Now du Pleiss has quit as a director of the SA Rugby Board too. He was highly thought of outside SA. Deep, deep trouble over there, I think.
How do they correct it do you think?

It’s getting silly – we could field a team of Boks from UK clubs that should on paper be a higher world ranking than the real article!

Oddly enough, it was co-written by the chap who co-created and co-wrote "Father Ted". Which only goes to prove that everyone has a ****e series in them somewhere.
Strange thing humour. I think between us we have shown how subjective it is (though I still cannot believe you are not a Red Dwarf fan!). Unless there is some personal resonance with the primary concept of a series (e.g. Music Hall Irish Slapstick?) it doesn’t matter how hard the writers try – it will not grab you.

I've never got as much as a smile out of it. I think it's classic slick American sitcom that relies on clever marketing more than good writing to achieve what it does.
It does make me laugh – but perhaps the proof of your view lies in the fact that very few episodes stand up to repeated viewing (for me at least).

The pertinent point could be that Wasps copped two cards and Perpignan seem - according to the report - not to have copped any. Perhaps Wasps are staging some sort of protest against the ref via citing.
I suspect you may have a point there. But it is futile – ERC ltd will back the officials, what else could they do? Wasps are of course yet another club with a single owner and therefore like so many of the others like that (i.e every other club in the premiership) have lost some grasp on traditions and are subject to the whim of that owner. They won heavily and do not appear to have sustained any serious injuries in the game so I have to ask - what exactly is the point?

Do you recall my outburst of anger in the RWC when
Eales was dragged onto TV to examine the (exclusively SH) truck and trailer allegations? It transpires Martin watched that and thought it both desperate and hilarious. Poor Ealesy he said, he sat there with this video of our intense 'wrong doing' being shown to him and finds nothing much wrong so have to makes such earth shattering comments ‘ooh, that’s a bit marginal’ and ‘ah, not too much wrong there’. As he is making these cutting observations the Video shows an Australian player flying in the side of a maul collapsing it (in what he hints is the traditional Australian manner) and there’s not a single comment on it from the TV pundits – after all it was a wattle shirt so it must have been legal.

He has a lot more to say on the RWC and I’m really enjoying the book - surprisingly enough. I must find out who ghosted it.
