  • Btw, I note that it takes a truly enormous rocket to deliver a couple thousand pound payload to the moon.

sky: Without the natives, the conquistadors wouldn't have known about the gold, and even if they did, they couldn't have mined it in any quantity until much, much later.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Maybe because now the expected benefit/cost-ratio is not very high. If the NASA or others that are for the explorations can give some convincing reasons for doing moon colonies and manned Mars expeditions more people would be in favour of it.
Most of the experts I've heard so far are saying that unmanned expeditions are a lot cheaper and can provide more knowledge for less money.

But we already know about the "gold" so we don't need natives to tell us about it.

And the cost/benefits aren't very high? Take the amount of resources on Earth. Then take the number of resources NOT on Earth. Notice the difference?

What's the "gold" in our current scenario?

the question is whether manned missions to other planets are the most cost-effective way to develop the tech needed to get these ressources. And if it wouldn't be more cost effective to develop technology that would allow us to use ressources we have on earth more efficiently. Better recycling, safer nuclear and fusion power come to mind. I'm not saying space projects don't have their advantages -I'm just wondering whether the projects planned now are not made to get more money from people who want to see some pictures from humans on mars.

Nixon gave us the day off without using Annual Leave, so I sat on the floor of my living room watching. I was 25 years old, damm to be 25 again.

Additionaly the US mannned mission to Mars would be a willy wangling competition designed to coincide with China landing its first man on the Moon.

The difference is that in 1491, we knew there was something else than Europe, and we believed that mindboggling riches awaited.

Today, we know very well that there is something out of the world, but we do not expect to find mindboggling riches there. As long as we are to look for valuable resources, manned missions are a waste of time and money, even though they're a nice dream.
