    • No way it's a waste of money or time.

First off, this planet where on now ain't gonna last us forever. We need to get off it at some point, why not start making our first steps now?

Secondly, the knowedge we'll learn will be invaluable, also nothing beats actual experience.

Ummmm I had some more points but I've been distracted and my thoughts are gone. So thats it for now.

Oh also, I think you guys are failing to realise how cool this would be.

I'm saying that the money to pay for this pork/nationalist jackoff is not there.

I understand that Bush will only fund the new program with $800 million next year. The big payoff comes when the shuttles are grounded after the Space Station construction is complete. That will give NASA at least $10 billion a year to play with.

BTW, does anyone know when the Space Station will be finished?

Also, if NASA were smart, it would sell the broadcast rights. The rights could be worth billions.

                        • 1. That doesn't add up to $500 billion.
                          2. NASA isn't going to stop all the real science it does to help pay for this. At least, I hope it wouldn't.

                          And broadcast rights for what?

                          • Establishing a permanent base on the Moon would be, in and of itself, real science.

It would also allow types of research that can now only be dreamt of.

                            • Establishing a base on the moon is a feat of engineering, not science. And the point was, a lot of NASA's budget is doing real science; if you take $10 billion a year from it, there's not much left.

                              • A moonbase is unlikely to be very viable, except as a curio. It would be totally dependant on imports from Earth, probably forever. It'll never be seriously colonised, just like Antarctica or Greenland, or the oceans.

A Mars mission would be pretty good, although the previous Bush also made a pledge to get to Mars, so this could just be electioneering.

The asteroid idea is mind-bogglingly insane. Juggling chainsaws with our entire civilization, just to get a load of metallic stuff we can find more easily on Earth?
