If you drive in America or Canada and you don't understand this, always drive in the right lane, NO MATTER WHAT:

The left lane is for the explicit purpose of passing cars in the right lane, and for merging into left-hand turns. This is irregardless to the posted speed limit or the presence (or lack thereof) of cars behind you. If you remain in a left-lane without passing other cars, you will either be passed on the right or you will be tailgated. You are not a police officer and the speed limit is neither yours to monitor nor enforce.

Also, if you are traveling down a one-way street with two or more lanes and parking is impossible to find, it is not appropriate to cut across any lane in order to reach a parking spot, if the distance between you and the open spot is less than it would take for you to signal, check your blind spot, and safely merge into the proper lane and pull into the parking spot without blocking traffic.

Every day I have to put up with morons who don't understand the two-lane system. I am a speed demon, but don't get me wrong: I obey school zones and construction zones and I don't cut people off or tailgate them (unless they're not respectful of the two-lane system; then it's open season) and I try to avoid passing on the right as much as I can. I stop for stop signs and red lights and I pay my taxes.

But please, for the love of GOD, DRIVE FASTER THAN THE CARS ON YOUR RIGHT!

            :P

              attention washington drivers:

the merging lane is for merging, not for stopping and then accelerating really fast onto the freeway when traffic clears

Nobody ever seems to understand that. Here in Maryland, what makes it even worse is that they put signs in two-lane areas saying "Slower traffic stay right." To someone with half a brain, the sign wouldn't cause a problem, because they understand that it means that you stay to the right unless you're passing a slower car. But the idiots interpret it as "stay in the left lane at all times, even if you're going 1/4 the speed limit."
