This thread is proof that the Dems are not voting to win this time as that appears to be the least of their concerns.

We backed his clan over a rival clan in the Ba'athist Party after the '68 coup, ensuring that he would be in a position of power. So we did put him near where he was, if not exactly there.

                      Thanks for noting it. Fixed.

MrFun, can I rephrase your original message just a bit -

"The Democrats should stop criticizing Bush just for the sake of criticising him. This is not going to win the election because the people who decide elections, the independents and middle-roaders, are going to see Democrat criticism as petty. Being petty and purely paritsan does not win votes. Providing serious alternatives to Bush's policies, like national health care, are what will win in the end."

Yeah, because chasing the middle has done the Dumbs so much good in the past ten years. As the Repugs have rushed to the right, the Dumbs have rushed right to catch them. Like the U.S. really needs to Republiocan Parties. Maybe that's why the Democratic base has stopped voting. As they said, "We didn't leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left us."

Frankly, if moderates are as smart as they think they are, then this little thing won't be an issue. After all, it was the Republicans who have been saying Saddam's not the issue.

BTW, I want a quote, Fun, where Dean was castigating Bush for not benig able to catch Hussein? And it has to be a main point, not ancillary to thaty miserable failure's complete mishandling of the war.

Actually I think Reagan said that .

Che, in a recent post, I don't know which thread, you lamented the fact that the Republican Party has been taken over by the right-wing religious fanatics, or something to that effect. Rush Limbaugh today was quoting a survey of Catholics. In 1988, by an 18% margin, Catholics who attended church weekly identified themselves as Democrats. Today, those same Catholics identify themselves as Republicans by a 2% margin.

Rush also quotes data on Protestant Christians who attended church regularly. By significant numbers, but I do not know the exact percentage, they support the Republican Party.

If you conducted similar survey of people who indemnify themselves as "patriotic," I think you would find a significant portion identify themselves as Republicans.

The Republican Party has become the majority party in United States because it attracts the religious and patriotic. I expect this trend to continue with the hysterical ACLU attacks on Christmas, with court decisions authorizing gay marriages and with the likes of Howard Dean ripping down the American flag from the White House and rhetorically burning it in joyful glee.

Urging Democrat nominees to adopt and espouse only the positions of the most extreme left elements of the party certainly is a formula for disaster.
