The Mary painting wasn't sacrilegious. Neither was Piss Christ. It's just no one took the time to understand what their meanings were.
Christianity: The belief that a cosmic Jewish Zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master, so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree...

Che, how do you think the people who actually believe in Christ or Mary feel about such art? They are the only ones who are qualified to gage whether such art is sacrilegious.

Secondly, suppose one put Muhammed, or Buddha in one of those works of 'art'? Would they be considered the same as if they used Christ or Mary?

LOL Che.....your heart is good...but how can you possibly defend this kind of nonsense? Isn't it the worst kind of elitism and snobbery?

I, and I think a great many people, don't agree with the professors and critical theorists and avant garde.

There IS something special and sacred and indefineable called Art, and it's important, and it's literally being pissed all over, at the Public expense.

            That felt good...off my chest.

              It might be.

BK, in the case of the painting, using elephant dung in art is very common where that particular artist is from. He was translating Mary into his culture. But I guess that's insulting.

Piss Christ is about the commericalisation and vulgarization of Christianity. But I guess you're okay with that.

So Piss Christ was painted by a Christian endeavouring a return to more authentic faith?

                I don't buy it.

Again, would we ever see Muhammed or Buddha portrayed in such a way?

He was translating Mary into his culture.
                Any evidence of this?

This is here in the United States, when you do something like this people, a lot of people, take offense to it no matter what their intentions were. If I went to anther country and something I did offended people of that culture, I would not do it while I was there as to not to insult people.

This America not that persons culture. So you are saying it is allright to do something offensive with your art as long as it is not offensive in your own culture you came from?

Since when does any one group have a monopoly on what "culture" is in America?

That is your prerogative. He said he was offended by cheap plastic Jesuses.

Just the artist's word for it.

But hey, art is meant to be interpretted, so feel free to be insulted.

We're not supposed to have anything like this, since it leads to idolatry. I fail to see how Piss Christ could possibly encourage anyone to have greater faith.

                        Books ! = Paintings.

AFAIK, Rushdie has a point. Those verses in the Q'uran could have been inspired by Satan. This is the justification given by Muhammed for changing these words.

I truly believe the "artist" would be called a bigot or a racist. There is an ingrained anti-Christian bias amoung some portions of the intelligensia. They feel anything goes against the evil white Christians but all the other religions should be a hands off zone.

If the government is going to give subsidies then either every religion gets this crap or no religion gets this crap. I am of the mind that no persons religion should be treated so poorly.

Please show me how one red cent of government money was used to subsidize that book. Also Rushdie made numerous valid points about the interpritations of the Koran the Iranian mullahs were making. He should exactly how and where their edicts were false and contradicted the mullahs and that is why the mullahs are still trying to kill him.

to the NEA. Art is essentialy entertainment. I see no reason why we subsidize some people's entertainment, but not others.

They all have points!!! That's what makes it art, not design. Liking it, agreeing with it, even understanding it, is not required. It conveys a message, which is often different to different people.

Let's try this from the other side. When I went to see Attack of the Clones, last year, I was sure (and still am) that the character that owned Adakin and his mother was a characture of a Jew (complete with Yssidic hat and curls and vest). Most everyone else said I was wrong, 'till Oswald pulled up an old Nazi depiction of "the Jew" and put it next to the Star Wars character. Interpretation, context, intent all flow together and are seen differently from different standpoints.

To you, Rushdie's work is art. To me, Piss Christ is art. To someone else, the Madonna piece is art.

I dno't know about thise pubic hairs and toe nail clippings. I'd have to see it.
