The growth rates for last quarter are in, and the economy grew at more than 3%, which is quite impressive.

I wouldn't trust anything Fox says. Whenever they say "fair and balanced", I think of the line from Shakespear:"Me thinks she protests too much". Thank got they lost that copyright infringement case. There's a principle in law that if your caught lying once, all your testimony is disregarded, I think Fox qualifies.

Polls are funny beasts. You could get the majority to admit the existence of UFOs if you had the right questions.

They are a useful tool, but very little can be predicted even with a completely accurate snapshot in one point in time.

While I would agree that "it's the economy, stupid" really means "it's the unemployment rate, stupid" for the purposes of presidential politics, the economy certainly is in recovery. It is growing.

The economy is growing at or below it's trend rate (3% to 3.5%), growth at that level means that unemployment is likely to stay the same, if not slowly rise.

It's not that impressive after a recession actually, and as that is the long term trend growth rate it means that (drum roll) things aren't getting any worse but the're not improving either.

Also much of that 3.1% growth came from spending by the armed forces during the iraq adventure - if you exclude that then growth was a paltry 1.4%

That's not true. Zogby has consistently been one of the most accurate polling outfits. Just prior to the 200 election, their numbers were Gore with 49% and Bush with 48%. That's nearly pinpoint accuracy, considering Gore did win the popular vote.

Popular vote wise, it was near a statistical tie. But according to Zogby polls, it should have been unwinnable ELECTORALLY for Bush as well.
