Edit: But I agree with this too,

If the problem isn´t severe, wich is something that a profesional should judge, not a bunch of people in a web forum , then you don´t need them... as somebody else said meditate or something, spend more time with your family, friends, etc.
Yes, get yourself to a physician and have him / her decide exactly what sort of problem you have. A lot of people are depressed for physiological reasons, and all the bucking it up or therapy in the world isn't going to help them with that.

Given the emerging data on the long term effects, one would be wise to consult all options before deciding on a treatment option. Simply going to see a professional and letting them decide is an abdictation of you responsibility to yourself.
What a load of crap. The professional isn't going to decide anything for you, you have to do that. What they will do is give you their opinion of what is wrong and suggest a treatment plan. You can take it or leave it, they aren't going to let you decide your own treatment plan if they disagree with it. So the only ways that someone is going to end up on anti-depressants who shouldn't be are these:

                1) Misdiagnosis. If you are afraid that you have been misdiagnosed or just careful, get a second opinion.

                2) Malpractice. Either your doctor made a stupid mistake, or he is unethical. Sue him and find someone else.

                3) The current standard of care is the best we have, but it changes as new evidence and techniques come to light. Perhaps in the future these drugs will be considered to be less than optimal. They might even be considered dangerous. Based upon our current data however they are a lot less dangerous than the chance that you will commit suicide if you don't treat your depression. Add to that the improvement in the quality of life that many people here have testified to and taking the drugs seems a reasonable risk.

                          • I was on Wellbutrin for about 2 months - then the seizures started, and I was hospitalised as epileptic before one orderly was intelligent enough to look in my stuff and found the Wellbutrin. He'd been in a clinical study for the crap, and he'd had seizures as well.

                            • Yeah, Wellbutrin's a load of crap. Nobody should judge the usefulness of antidepressants based on its example.
And we couldn't possibly be a suicide cult. We'd disagree about how to kill ourselves. Bods would strike every method we came up with until we found one that hadn't been used for lynching by the KKK, Swithy would refuse OD pills and suggest alternatives nobody would be able to understand, many of us would argue against various methods for their poor symbolism, Obiwan and Albert Speer would get into a fight over what deity we were sacrificing ourselves to, Sava would make fun of both of them, Ned would interject periodic provisos about getting the Pope's approval...we couldn't even solve the problem by killing each other, because Ming wouldn't let us. Let's face it; as a group, we are too contrary for death to handle.

Simple solution, we recognise depressives for the superior beings we are, giving us near omnipotence. That way, the world will be run by people who know how to do it, and we get to exorcise our demons by the application of absolute power!
