Yet your own source suggests that 60-70% benefit from taking it....
Do you understand at all why medical studies use placebos?

You have to strip out from this 60-70% the amount of people who get better solely due to being told they are getting something to make them feel better, rather than through any inherent properties of the drug.

As many as 83% of those who benefitted "from" the anti-depressant would also have benfitted from a sugar pill.

Funnily enough, being married to a clinical Pharmacist, yes I do. I also know about their limitations, hence drawing them to your attention.

Now find out at what point the gap between "placebo results" and recorded improvements is before the drug is considered clinically effective.

Hmmm, well all trials are double-blind placebo controlled nowadays. And believe me, a lot of people with better knowledge and experience than your own have gone through this stuff. Believe me, these things wouldn't have got a licence from the MCA or FDA without significant knowledge of it's effects.

            • Yes, but do those charged with finding a cure for depression Rich actually truly want to find one? After all, then they'd be out of a job.

Therefore they might refuse to offer the best advice for getting out of a slump: eating well, exercising regularly and forcing yourself to get out there and do things around others.

              • I wouldn't even mind my anti-depressant being a placebo, as long as it is some sort of help. It's a bit like a kind of spiritualism if you know what I mean. It absolutely doesn't matter if it makes sense or not as long as you don't worry about it and pretend it does.

Maybe you should try SOME belief-based kind of action, Bodd's. Provost might not admit it, but swallowing happy pills because he knows so much about biochemistry is actually the same kind of thing

I do. But the thing you forget is that I don't always need the company of others to be entertained, that sometimes I just want to relax as I have a very busy job, and my colleagues and friends are in the same boat and they like to relax on an evening...besides I am currently giving TLC to my new system

                  • should I take happy pills?

I have been thinking about Paxil or Zoloft for social anxiety. I keep seeing those commercials. But I don't like drugs. I don't even do caffeine anymore (though I did drink an espresso at the poly meet).

I have been trying to work through it without drugs, but haven't had much luck.

                      • Diss, ask a doc. Or 2 or 3, then decide. Only if it's bad though.

I decided to go for it when I realised that a suicide attempt (in planning and preparation if not execution anyway) is more than enough like a sign for something going wrong...

                        • Well this is because you're taking it so seriously Stew...you get so wound up, and refuse to listen to people who may know something that you do not.
