IIUC there were lines at ALL nearby payphones.

In a situation like this, I would suggest politely asking the person to hang up. If she refused, I would ask again, a little louder and more forcefully this time. And still louder, and still louder ......

    • I am ashamed, though. They're looting and there hasn't been a hockey game in 3 months.

I'm not saying I wouldn't get a little rude. But I would stop short of assaulting somebody. They have a right to use the phone for as long as they want. This isn't a life-or-death situation; it's an ease of mind situation...

        • Its absolutely amazing how people here have handled the situation...

Restaurants with gas stoves making food as fast as possible, stores selling batteries and flashlights at a DISCOUNT - even for free in some cases. No looting, no criminal activity, people talking with their neighbors, gathering around radios and portable TVs. People worked late, some people even went to work when the power was still off this morning.

It took nearly 24 hours for them to get the power back on where I live. It could have been a lot worse. Travel is hell, but I've got nowhere to go.

I don't think the situation could have reasonably been any better over here.

But it depends how long this person has been hanging on the Phone.
Giving an hourlong Live-Report of the Situation in Town over a Payphone could drive even the most friendly person mad

              • oh yeah, you know how this has sucked for people affected by the blackout? Iraq hasn't had power or water since the war began... just thought I'd mention that.

                • Hi Beta!

As Beta knows, I live/work in Toronto as well. I was at a client's office (20th flr.) in downtown when the power went out yesterday. We shut down servers on UPS' and then milled around for a bit before the emergency lights went out and the evac siren came on. Walked down the pitch black stairs.

Downtown was interesting - it was calm mayhem - thousand of people exiting buildings with no where to go and no way to get there. After confirming my suspicion that the subway wasn't running, I started walking in the direction of my wife's office (1 hour by foot). Once there I found that she had head home long ago, and I got to our apartment in another hour.

Since we've been house-sitting for my cousin this week, we had little in the way of food in our apartment. So we gathered up what cash we had on hand and headed out again, hoping to find a place serving food (a hot dog vendor at least), and thinking of getting on a bus headed towards my cousin's place if possible, because our clothes, some food, and our car, were at out there. (We take the subway into the city each day.)

We got here about 2-3 hours, and 3 buses later. We were actually quite lucky with buses, managing to get on the first one at a point where many people got off (or the driver wouldn't have let more people on), and not having to wait long where we had to change buses.

The neatest thing I saw yesterday was normal citizens directing traffic at large intersections. Some of us on the bus cheered them through the windows whenever we passed one. I hope they get some recognition for their selfless efforts. One guy in particular was manning a very large intersection (Warden and Eglinton) quite flawlessly. We were concerned for his safety because he was wearing dark clothing and had no reflective gear or flashlight.

Of course Sava will ignore that the biggest proponents of destroying excess food are the family farms and their biggest supporters are the Democratic Party, which keeps winning in the MidWest on its pledge of farm subsidies .

Sorry, that's not true Imran. The biggest offenders are the corporate farmers who get the vast majority of agricultural welfare. The unions and family farmers in the midwest support the Dem's who try to give their constituents what they can in order to survive.

Republicans = Corporate interests--- the big guy
Democracts = Organized Labor interests--- the little guy

I know that having people who are INFORMED about reality stifles your party's attempts at keeping people ignorant. So I understand your opposition to me.
