Nice to see you sticking up for the disabled Bodds.

Also no surprise that you don't say that you don't want a dictatorship.
      Yeah, let's have illiterate politicians.

If Ming/MtG had any sense, all that is necessary is a removal of that picture from Red Jon's post and a brief ban. Three days, for example.

It would be amusing to hear you repeat such a view among Plaid Cymru supporters around Aberystwyth.

Any other points of our democracy you'd like to restrict? The Reform Acts? Magna Carta?

Let's have no more Secretaries of State for Wales who don't know Welsh and are caught on television mouthing badly to the national anthem of Wales (John Redwood).

Let's have politicians who are bilingual in Erse and Scots Gaelic, for the Six Counties and Scotland.

Let's have politicians who can speak in all the languages of their constituents- English, Gujerati, Cantonese, Turkish, Vietnamese, Urdu, Italian, Greek,.....

Because believe it or not, Bodders old chum, old mate, the world outside that whited sepulchre of a laager you live in is a lot more diverse and 'colourful' than you know.

              • Here in Canada, we have 2 official languages, English and French so we need two sets of interpreters, English for the French speaking folks, and French for the English speakers.

AFAIK all of our PM's have been bi-lingual. The reasoning behind this is that the PM should be able to address the people in either language so that neither one feels 'left out'.

However, there are certain residency and citizenship requirements for all candidates, including a minimum proficiency in one language or the other.

If the colonies can do this, why can't Britain? It's simply a matter of respect for the people of the country, to be able to address them in the language they use.

However, the very fact that a man illiterate can be elected to parliament is the surest sign of the decline in British civilisation. Should not a councillor be required to hold public sessions to raise support in order to be elected?

Bodds, I for one support your thoughts in this instance and implore the British to find their roots here in Canada. You'd probably be more comfortable.

He's not illiterate. He can read, write and speak Urdu fluently. He's not an imbecile.

As has already been pointed out he can also read English without assistance. His ability to speak English should clearly be improved, and no doubt he is studying it intensively.

Would it be wrong to elect a ('native' English) councillor who has deaf and dumb? Would that be a sure sign of the decline of civilisation?

Yeah we have that too - enshrined in a sentence in the citizenship law that defies german grammar.
“Now we declare… that the law-making power or the first and real effective source of law is the people or the body of citizens or the prevailing part of the people according to its election or its will expressed in general convention by vote, commanding or deciding that something be done or omitted in regard to human civil acts under penalty or temporal punishment….” (Marsilius of Padua, „Defensor Pacis“, AD 1324)

                      FP:

Deafness is not a problem, people can learn to speak well through lip reading and speech therapy. Not being able to speak is a much more difficult problem, since I do not think such a person could adequately discharge their duties as a public official, unless they can be trained to speak.

As for a 'native', I don't care where they come from, so long as they have proper citizenship. Last I checked citizenship can be held by immigrants.

Thanks for the clarification that the man can read just fine, he cannot speak English.

His ability to speak English should clearly be improved, and no doubt he is studying it intensively.
For the sake of his constituents, I would hope so.

It was a joke and not exactly exaggerating Boddignton's point of view at that.
