  • Most expensive project ever?

Do any of the more educated Apolytoners know what is the most expensive project (adjusted for inflation) in history?

    My candidates are:

    The Manhattan Project (most likely)

    Project Apollo

    The Space Shuttle Program

    and

The Polaris Missile System (apparently that cost a bomb [I know ])

If you start counting man-hours wouldn't it be from ancient times?

Pyramids for example (no idea, rather asking then stating )
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing?

            Serious answers please.

The labour on the pyramids was free, wasn't it?

Apollo program cost in the 20-30 billion dollar range. Manhattan is usually quoted as 2 billion. Even taking inflation into account, Apollo wins that horse race...

I remember hearing a statistic that at one point, the Manhattan Project used 10% of the electricity in America. That's not monetary cost, but it's still an awfully large expenditure of resources.

OK, but what about Polaris? All the development of the submarines, the missile system, etc. Must have been pretty expensive.

No. Pharoah had to pay to house and feed the workers, as well as provide for the designers, foremen, the workers in the city (20,000 by some estimates), etc.

You also have the cost in lives of those who died during the building (and plenty did).

I'd say as percentage of GDP and man-hours involved, the Cheops Pyramid would be a strong contender for most expensive project ever.

B2 program is up there too. The quoted cost of a single bomber is 500 million dollars, IIRC.
