    The labour on the pyramids was free, wasn't it?
    Current research indicates slaves weren't used, but with such a large workforce, I'd be surprised if Pharaoh didn't think of using slaves for the more back breaking labor even if specialised workers, managers, designers, chiselers, masons, etc., were paid.

    I think The Great Wall is the answer, although the Great Pyramid was first in my mind. There's an even larger pyramid in Mexico, but it was largely filled in with dirt and cased with rock.
