That's nothing. I got to book 8 of Robert Jordan's turgid Wheel of Time series. I knew the first book wasn't nearly as good as the fanboys had told me, but I kept reading because they said "It gets so much better!" Not only did it not get better, it got so very, very much worse. I now consign those books to the gutter of fantasy writing and name Jordan the biggest literary fraud of the genre.

I don't mind the book, hey if you're having fun with it .

I DO mind the hype surrounding it , I don't need to see an interview/book-store riot every ffing day on the news.

            Robert Jordan's not THAT bad.

"I don't see how you can draw a parallel of that to Twain's commentary on the society as a whole in Huck Finn Perhaps you could enlighten me?"

Could Rowling's subtle lack of commentary on Ravenclaw be a subtle commentary on the stealth mode the intellectual class seems to be suffering right now? I think so.

Yeah, but what's so special about HP?

I mean, Agathon hates anything and everything anyway.

I reckon Agathon's just jealous of anyone successful.

Man, I heard this one's almost 900 pages, too . I like to read some hefty tomes, but more of crap is still crap.

                I don't get it.....

Yes, he IS. The first book of the series was mediocre. Not bad, but lord it wasn't that good. His characters are so one-dimensional and stiff it's appalling. The fact that I can easily predict what each character will do any every (hackneyed) situation he throws them in is telling (invariably, they will do such stupid, senseless things that Jordan has to invoke deus ex machinas to extract them). They are cardboard.

The story wasn't even original, as anyone who has read Tolkien could tell you. While most fantasy is derivative of Tolkien, Jordan actually ripped of the plot.

The subsequent books got worse and worse as it became clear he was just making up the story as his porcine little fingers typed. I could take all the events that have happened in the 5000+ pages of books 2 through 8 and condense them into a novella. He spends ages going NOWHERE, his characters doing NOTHING except mentally masturbating in a pretense at profundity that is so obviously shallow that Danielle Steele would find it banal.

I'm of the opinion that Jordan doesn't exist, that "he" is really some bizarre book-writing committee where everybody is assigned a section and given a month to flesh out a basic plot outline. How else can he keep pumping out 900 pages of crap so fast?

                      I am inclined to agree.

Actually, I think he's just a fatass who sits at his computer and makes up stuff as he goes because he really has nothing important to say. The fact that nothing happens for massive stretches at a time supports this, since one doesn't have to plan out 100s of pages of nothingness.

No, I just nurture an intense dislike of the whole Harry Potter phenom. It has nothing to do with elitism either. I'd still hate him even if I only read comics.

If you like Harry, then that's your problem. But what's wrong with me calling it as I see it. Nobody is preventing you from disagreeing.
