That was the one that struck me most when I took my Asian-American studies class (I'm a white boy but I wanted to broaden my outlook). Many Asian-Americans have begun to believe the media advertising which our culture is submerged in where it is beaten over their head that white is beautiful and the northern white look is the most sought after. It's sad but true and Asians aren't the only ones just about every minority group has the same negitive self image.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Speer: BTW the thing with getting a suntan started in the late 19th century as a way for the leasure class to show off how much extra time they had to waste at the beach or on tropical vacations. This was especially true in the northeast where your average factory worker had a pasty white complexion from always being in doors.Try http://wordforge.net/index.php for discussion and debate.

Oerdin is correct: prior to that, having no Sun-tan showed that you had to work in the fields.
But still, tanned features are good, for a very natural reason. Though that reason only becomes apparent in the nude, since nudity and it's acceptability is becoming more and more widespread in our society, the effects of tan are well known to everyone. More vivid, and distinguished features.

actually having a sunt tan was considered bad sometime ago. that you were working outside.
hence nobility did not have sun tan.
afterwards and with the evolution of humanity it was considered evident that a tanned skin is healthier than a pale one hence everyone went to get one and look healthy.

a beautiful asian looks kinda different from a beautiful european, but nevertheless, we both know who's beatuful and who's not"An archaeologist is the best husband a women can have; the older she gets, the more interested he is in her." - Agatha Christie

BTW it's evident that speer feels that he's been discriminated arbitrarily by fashion magazines.
I think this is because as shi said different cultures have different ideas about beauty which for most of them is based on how they look so since in the US lighter skin is the majority the majority gets to dictate its own perception of beauty.

I do know that in the middle ages until about the 17th century men wanted to marry a big girl because that meant she came from a family who was rich enough to feed her and take care of her so they'd probably have money for a dowry.

That's because the choice was that or a "hardworking" woman.
Believe me, I **** you not. There was a BBC program that talked about that, and showed that. I thought your way, too, until I saw that show.
It seems that what we'd find a good looking woman, our ancestors would find that, too. It's just they were much rarer, so their standards were much lower.

so i dont see how there is a blonde, blue-eyed standard of beauty. the standard of beauty is clearly for the caramel-toned/coffee with cream skin, black hair, and brown/black eyes.
