Those are frighteningly low prices. However, you are stuck in the arse-end of nowhere.

My area is very diverse, but due to the school district (one of the top rated in the nation) houses are in very high demand = very expensive.

2 bedroom houses will go for 140,000 or more.

3 bedroom - your lucky if you can get one under 200,000 now adays, many are over a quarter million bucks.

The larger houses in the area are from 500,000 to multi million dollar homes in Terrel Hills and Olmos Basin (very nice areas)

$0, since there are no houses in my meighborhood. As for NYC, it varies immensely. For a townhouse, I can't see paying under 900k for one in midtown or the west side. houses out on queens or brooklyn must be cheaper than that.

My family's apartment has 2 bedrooms, a livingroom-dinning room area, a small kitchen, and 1.5 bathrooms (well, l4, its small) and it would likely go now for 250-300k.

Lowest unemployment isn't very impressive when people are moving out of your province, you know.

Some friends of mine moved to Calgary last year. They paid $250,000 for a house in the University district that would have cost them $79,000 in Winnipeg.
House prices are soaring in Calgary, it's the downside in living in the fastest growing major city in North America doncha know.

It's incredible when you own a big house that's already paid off, and its value keeps skyrocketing though.

The 3-bedroom house I live in is worth around $300,000 Australian. Which sucks, as I have to pay that much if I'm going to own it.

Too damn much. I'm in one of the highest housing areas in the country, the January 2001 county median was nearly 650,000. It's come down a bit, but we still beat almost anywhere else in the nation.

I live in a four bedroom, four bathroom, two story (three, including basement) house. We finished the basement to add an additional bathroom and bedroom, as well as an additional family room. The first floor contains a good sized kitchen, family room, living room, and a small study. We have 1.2 acres behind the house. I don't know the square footage, but I believe the house was lat assessed at right around $500k, give or take 20k, depending on the market.

                  I don't know... 40K?

there's so many abandoned houses (that the city is slow to board up) so you could thereotically have an alright house for free

because then they'd have to burn Queens, the Bronx, DC, Baltimore, Chicago, Detriot, Gary, Atlanta...

Shanky, cyclotron7, etc - What Cities/towns do you live in ?

Asher - When you leave your family in a year or two, what sort of place do you think you could afford in Calgary? I suspect the Alberta boom will last 4-5 more years so prices will keep climbing till then.
