  • GePap, the picture is only taken at a different angle.. and when smiling it seems my cheeks are fatter..

For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

    • Do you really think so, GePap? I mean, we're a ripoff culture off most of European countries after all...

It seems like you are finally admitting it..

Buenos Aires always seemed to try and copy my home city, Madrid in a way... not very successfully though.

Of course..I mean look at a Map..it used to be mostly European, now it is not. You are fulfilling the happy and fine traditions laid out by the many immigrants to argentina.

At least Don Francisco is Argentine.

          • The only positive thing I can think of is saying something utter pathetic like "Argentina will rise again!"

Anyway, hopefully in 17 days, a big part of our dark past will be buried.

                • Nah, you guys did it all to yourselves..be proud, no other state has gone down so many steps as Argentina
No, i'm sorry but other countries in the world helped us.
By 1940 we had the government of Peron (although i'm not peronist he did some good things..and some others bad) and we where the 7th economy in the world (bigger than canada and others). Peron estatized all the public companies and we were in our top. In the 70's we had our most terrible military coup of General Videla that WAS argentinian but he was educated in USA and his coup was suppourted and aided by USA. Even he had a meeting with the USA president at the time (don't remember his name).
In 1983 the coup ended, leaving 30.000 ''dissapeared'' people most of them of Middle class and some of them with left wing ideas but some others not.
In 1989 president Menem assumed and in his 10 years of presidency he privaticed all the state companies that Peron estatized(notice the contradiction, as menem claims to be a peronist). The IMF suggested this privatizations and Menem did it. For many years the IMF regarded Argentina as an example ''perfect economy policie''. And that ''perfect economic policy'' suggested by the IMF is what in great part lead us to the current situation. Even today the IMF continue pressing on privatizations and they tell us to ''be tough'' with riots. Menem continues to be a great friend of Mr. Bush father until today.

                      • I wanna admit this right now: I love Argentina. I don't want to leave this country in two - three months and go to California. If given the choice, I prefer to live here instead. My folks are moving to Northern Italy.

And by the way I lied about my boyfriend, he isn't mexican, he is infact Argentine. I just said he wasn't because I could be cornered. Well no sense in denying it.

I think it was 1945 when Argentina was ranked the 7th economy in the world. Considering that most of the rest of the world was in ruins that's not so surprising. You also have to take into account that by that time Argentina had already received large sums of money from the Nazis. Soon nosy old Uncle Sam was insisting that Argentina give it back. Peron wasn't in power in 1940. I think he assumed the Presidency in 1945 or 1946. By the time Peron left (1952 or 1953?) Argentina was near bankruptcy and had certainly slipped far down the ladder as the nations of Europe began to recover from the war (and got their money back).

I wanted to mean in the 40's. I'm a bit sleepy.

I know. and that's why i told i'm not peronist. He did some things good (nationalizing public companies, closing the external debt) but he was pro-nazi and he didn't let very much free speech.
What i wanted with my post is to enfasize the fact that USA and other countries got benefits with the fall of Argentina and helped it to fall (helping Videla, the IMF telling our gov. what to do, etc.)
Our fall is the fault of our politicians but also of some foreing countries (especially USA), that helped to consolidate our fall.

                            • Argentina was already within the top 8 as of 1900 (In theory behind the likes of the (US, Germany, UK, France, Russia, and so on). So their high spot was not just due to WW2 devastation and Nazi money but trade in agricultural commodities. And they made a killing during WW1, one of the biggest winners, in terms of money.

Anyways, I just want to say... I hope this country recovers soon. I want to see my friends have bright futures or they will have to leave the country.
