Yeah, but he wasn't a prime minister in the first series.

          British comedy hands down.

American comedy is contrived. Did you know that for every US sitcome that makes it to air, something like 100 don't even get past their initial test screening (or whatever they call it)?

So the ones we see on TV are the good ones! Yeah, some are funny, but there's a lot of crap on their TV, too. At least now the Yanks have shows funnier than Family Ties Of course, the only cutting edge American comedy is animated. The Simpsons, South Park and Duckman are their best comedies in decades. The Yanks should leave unanimated sitcoms to the Poms!

          Fawlty Towers
          Blackadder
          Mr. Bean
          Monty Python
          Yes, Minister

Even crappier ones like Love Thy Neighbour, Not the Nine O' Clock News, The Two Ronnies and The Young Ones are head and shoulders above most of the crap that comes out of the States.

          Need i go on?

Okay, if you insist Years ago, when i went to the States and Canada, i was looking forward to watching Saturday Night Live. What a disappointment!
It is awful! I couldn't believe how so many funny people came through SNL! My only theory is that they got out of such a show as early as possible and into movies Perhaps the fact that most British comedy is on TV explains the high quality of their sitcoms?

I couldn't agree more. They are totally formula-driven drivel. My wife hates it when I occassionally watch this-or-that with her for a few minutes and then tell her almost exactly is going to happen for the rest of the show. Then I go back to the PC or my books.

Ok what was the british comedy that had a very unattractive girl named Linda who was living with the guy from The Thin Blue Line and in this comedy he was an aspiring actor and didn't have eyes for her but she had eyes for him and she wore these huge white glasses. What was the name of that.....

Seinfeld is funny? I couldn't find it funny even if I were drunk. Bah. Cheers was good though, and so were Married with Children and Simpsons. South Park was funny for the first half hour.

Sienfeld is funny in a stand-up comedy type of way. It really does speak of everyday life.

I really like Frasier, Seinfeld (warching another downloaded episode now, in fact - The Andrea Doria), The Simpsons etc etc....

But I greatly prefer British comedy. Since I'm British that should hardly be surprising, however.

Yes! Minister/Prime Minister was a great show.

But honestly, what is this crap about American comedy being "contrived." Please. We seem to be discussing TV shows here. What TV show isn't contrived?!

Lung, Saturday Night Live has sucked for years and years now (a decade, maybe). I'm sorry nobody warned you. It was good when it had a good cast. Those people all jumped ship and got their own shows or did movies and so now it sucks.

For that comment you get a quick snippet of Holly-tastic goodness!

Holly: I'm not bored. I've had a real busy morning. I've devised a system to totally revolutionise music.
                                Lister: Get outta town!
Holly: Yeah, I've decimalised it. Instead of the octave, it's the decadive. And I've invented two new notes - H and J.
Lister: 'ang on a minute - you can't just invent new notes!
Holly: Well I have. Now it goes "DOH RAY ME FAH SOH LAH WOH BOH TEE DOH. DOH TEE BOH WOH LAH SOH FAH ME RAY DOH".
