  • I don't like Dreylin's proposal as it places too much emphasis on how threatening Imperio are, which is more likely to encourage Templars to side with them than against them.

    • @Kodii: My thought was that it would make them feel like we depended on them and they were important to our progress. I felt it couldn't hurt, but if we are worried about them asking us for a favour in return we can leave it out. OTOH, we are at a point where we are offering them a kitchen-sink type deal in order to secure their aid, so if they come to us now asking a favour, we'd likely want to do it for them anyway....

@Swiss: Fair enough, I think we can remove most of that emphasis by just leaving out the final paragraph.

We do need to send something quickly, and the absence of any alternative suggestions....

      • I like the email, but would remove the Elephant sentence as per Swiss's comment above, and possibly the entire last paragraph.

        • Honoured Knights Templar,

We wonder if you had reached consensus on our NAP extension proposal. In the absence of contact to the contrary, and per that agreement, we consider the NAP extended to T134. This is of joyous news to our citizens, especially in light of recent acts of aggression from our other neighbours.

Imperio have proven most inconsistent in their dealings with us; one minute we are close trading partners and valued allies; the next, they are enacting military trade embargos upon us and asking our allies to do the same. As you may already be aware, their perfidious spies have undertaken acts of sabotage within our lands. We have sent repeated emissaries to their lands seeking an extension of the NAP agreement which recently expired; all returned without gaining audience with their fickle Rulers.

We were as surprised as you must be that they have now broken their own embargo to trade to us the extremely economically important Technology of Currency, however we are still expecting, and preparing for an attack to come as soon as the NAP “cooling off” period expires.

With your aid, we have been able to meet the lost tribe of Bananas and initiated diplomatic contact. They are as worried as we are by the rise of Pal and the premature perishing of the Rabbits, and are interested in cooperating with us against the Titans which Pal & Imperio are becoming. We would seek to add Templars to this budding alliance of smaller teams.

We still hope to persuade your noble Order to allow us access to the secrets of Metal Casting. As the only empire now not possessing this key technology, we are willing to offer a substantial deal for its acquisition. In addition to the previously suggested trade of Aesthetics & Literature, we are prepared to add the valuable military technology of Horseback Riding.

          Your humble friends,

          TeamRB
Since the consensus was that we were talking up Imperio's strength too much, I have done as suggested; removed the final paragraph, removed the reference to War Elephants, and re-worded the spy/sabotage comment to be less specific.

This is a really high-risk move. I'm not entirely comfortable with it as the whole renewal mechanism was a suggestion, but it's not inconsistent with our last message. We should ditch the last sentence as it's getting close to gloating.

This should go, too. Templars know the embargo story, and I think we need something better than the Spy action to get Templars onside. If we can get Imperio to deny their Spying, we may be in business. May not happen though, obviously.

Sorry, but Templars know that the embargo was tech-specific. And we shouldn't say we expect war soon: it just seems an invite to dogpile.

They did propose to help, but we didn't take up their offer as PAL offered a more rapid meeting. We should 'big up' their offer of help, though.

As mentioned earlier, I'd prefer to stress that their loss for not trading us MC is much greater than Imperio's (I feel the above just makes us look desperate for what is now a 5-turn tech), but I have to admit that I'm struggling to find an angle that would lead to them breaking their treaty with Imperio, especially when Imperio has fulfilled their part of the bargain. Should we maybe just ask them to name their price? Anyone got any bright ideas?

                • Actually - I like it. This is templar and we should repeat and repeat what we have said before (unlike PAL who like it short and sweet). However, SP does make some good points ...

Given that we have techs that you lack and that we have traded them to nearly all of the other teams it seems that we both find ourselves in a similar situation. Namely, missing a tech or two that nearly all other teams know, apparently due to a one sided trade embargo. As we have said before, we think this is hurting your team more than ours.

Under what terms would you be willing to trade us metal casting?

                  • "Make" should be "Made," but otherwise it looks fine Ruff. I do prefer the last red paragraph over the blue option (spelling out the techs we can offer for Metal Casting).

                      • I also like the Dreylin/Ruff draft we have overall. The only two points I would make are:

                        - I'm not sure we should say that we automatically assume an extention of our NAP. That's definitely pushing things, and Templars never officially agreed to the deal we proposed. Can we reword that section to make it more neutral?

                        - I think we should add in talk of trading them wines in exchange for sugar, with us sending them wines immediately (contingent upon a MC trade, obviously!) and them sending us sugar in return when they gain access to Calendar tech. That's ridiculously generous of us, and we KNOW that Templars are hurting for happiness, because none of their cities are larger than size 5!

                        Comment

                        • Well they back-dated their approval of the NAP ~5turns earlier than they actually told us about it, so I don't think it's too unreasonable that we do the same ... after all, the offer is continegent on contact to cancel and they've had plenty of opportunity.

However, as long as we can get this out rapidly:

We wonder if you had reached consensus on our NAP extension proposal. Per that agreement, should we not hear back to the contrary before the end of the current turn, we consider the NAP extended to T134.
Also Wines, with an adjustmet of the final paragraph:

We still hope to persuade your noble Order to allow us access to the secrets of Metal Casting. As the only empire now not possessing this key technology, we are willing to offer a substantial deal for its acquisition. Under what terms would you be willing to trade us metal casting? We are willing to make a substantial Technology offer; in addition to which we are willing to put a down-payment on your first tradable Sugar resource. We would immediately make available one of our Wine resources, to be cemented as a swap as soon as you have a spare Sugar available.
