Hi Pal,
in your last message you said, you will re-assess your dealings with Imperio if they ally with Rabbits. This is clearly the case, as Imperio has recently given Rabbits military techs fro free (construction among others). Yet you decline our Optics vs. Engineering offer and rather pay Optics & Music (both of military relevance) to our war opponent for Engineering.
Needless to say, we don't like that much.
We know you get a certain amount of trade route income from our cities. We, on the other hand, get no trade routes with foreign countries whatsoever, due to the war with Imperio and Templars (a war you helped to prolong). As you, understandably, refused us any tech that lead up to liberalism, you will understand, that we feel not inclined to help your economy by supplying you with gold income. We will therefore close borders until mutual beneficial trade routes are available again.
We hope you see the logic behind that, as it is clear to us you are currently running away with the game.

I mean, if one looks at it from their view, it makes complete sense. They'd rather trade techs with a civ that probably won't win the game than their main rival.

I just don't think that closing borders at this time will achieve much and could cost us. I like your first paragraph but I don't agree with closing borders for the time-being.

How about one more attempt at getting Philo from them (not that we have anything to give them). We could spell it out for them...

"This 2v1 war is effectively killing our whole continent as a threat to you - how about you help us have some fun (smashy / smashy) with Imperio and Templar by gifting us Philosophy."

Or we could just gift Rabbits some key techs....

I am very tempted to gift Rabbits everything we have available, one tech every few turns. It might not make a difference, but it should cause a minor roadblock for PAL.

I would think a research pact with Rabbits would make more sense. Its less obvious, and it isn't like the techs we have now will give them a lot of immediate benefit.

As long as the techs we give them are the ones Imperio knows of, it would look to PAL like Imperio are the ones feeding Rabbits techs. (Construction and Engineering come to mind.) We can ask Rabbits for a payment in the future, but for now we can just keep our aid to them low key and let PAL assume Imperio are the ones doing it.

This might do more to convince PAL to stop helping Imperio than anything we could say in an email.
