  • Wha-huh? Unbelievable! This is the most schizo team ever!

I would also seriously think about something along the lines of what mh said above. "We're not sending you Literature unless you promise to keep your spies out of our territory." Doesn't seem like a stretch to me, as we offered the trade well before they started mucking around in our territory. Pillaging resources with spies is practically tantamount to a declaration of war anyway. But we don't want the reputation of a team that breaks deals either...

What does everyone think? We've got until next turn to come to some kind of a consensus.

    • As I see it, we have two choices ...

      1) act as if we are not at war
      2) act as if we are at war

Maybe we send them a frank review of their actions from out point of view and ask them their intentions ...

      Imperio,

Your recent actions (sabotaging our copper and trading us currency) are not consistent and could easily lead to mistakes being made. What are your intentions towards us?

We have observed your war preparations for the last 15 turns and are currently ready to met your expected war declaration. This is not our preferred approach, but we are ready to respond to your unprovoked hostilities.

      other stuff here ...
Let them run it through google if they have to. I think we must communicate to them that we are ready - they will suffer a world of hurt and that we have some communications to share with other teams to show that we are the victim.

      • I doubt we will actually go ahead and withhold the tech but I am not opposed to sending an email such as the one Ruff is suggesting this turn. Emails are cheap and it cannot hurt to simply ask them what the hell is going on and also to issue a stern warning that any military action is bound to fail and hurt us both. I don't think the email we send should actually threaten withholding literature. Well, the first email anyway. If they don't reply to that email then we could threaten it.

        • A promise is a promise. I'd rather lose the game than win it on lying and reneging. Pillaging copper has nothing to do with tech trades. Just MHO.

          • I think we should send them a note this turn (T114) reaffirming our commitment to send them Lit, but pointing out that we know it was their Spy, and that if they want to live in peace then they shouldn't make such warlike moves.

            • I agree with T-hawk, we shouldn't mess with RB's reputation but reneging on a deal. After all, we knew they'd sabotaged us before we last offered the trade.

But I also agree that we should send an e-mail regarding their sabotage.

"Your recent actions at Cape Town could well be construed as an Act of War, and thus in contravention of our previous agreements. We are willing to overlook this incident as a misunderstanding provided suitable reparations are made, however should this happen again we are prepared to unlease the full force of our Army & Diplomatic corps against you."

              • I would prefer to send them message along the lines of holding back Lit until our copper is reconnected. Unless they want to help us out with their metal for a few turns. hehe.

                • nice ... how about something like ...

"Rogues in your livery were seen sabotaging our copper. We know this wasn't you, one of our longest and best friends and we were wondering if you could lend us some copper for a few turns"

                  • Lol, while highly amusing, sending that would take away the option of sending them a stern warning.

                      Exactly.

Breaking our promise ruins RB's reputation. Whatever realpolitic arguments you have for messing with existing deals, the fact remains that to the best of our knowledge no other team has broken a direct promise so far in this game. (Sure, Imperio is sneaky, but they are being exactly as aggressive as literal interpretation of our NAP agreement allows.)

                      • My position is that it would be petty to delay or withhold a promised tech over a minor act of sabotage.

I certainly don't rule out breaking our word at some point, but if we do so, make it a Diplomacy-style, game-defining, lethal betrayal, not some minor tantrum over a storm in a tea-cup.

                        • Any fancy wording is lost on Imperio anyway.
If you guys believe that withholding Lit will result in lasting damage of RBs reputation beyond this game, then I am fine with that.

For pure ingame politics I feel delaying it because of the sabotage is ok.

At least we should wait from them to demand Lit in-game and send an eMail saying "we want Lit back if we see another spy in our territories"

                          • Hi,

as I've stated previously already, I'd like to leave our reputation intact. Playing honorably will do us a lot of good later in the game when interacting with the other teams. Remember, demogame success is a lot about diplomacy. We can start acting dastardly when it's clear that we will win the game, although even then I'd be against it.

                            • Alright, you guys have talked me into softening the stance with Imperio. We send them Literature next turn, along with a stern email that says further sabotage of our territory will not be tolerated, and will be viewed as a violation of our non-aggression pact. How about that?

                              • SOunds ok.
Can we put a gold number to the loss of copper?
We could make a reparation claim just to make the diplo more lively.
                                100 gold would do.
