It's probably a regular occurence, actually. I know I plan for it in PBEMs when I'm taking someone out (and make sure nobody is going to harbor them). The latter part is the weirder part I guess, the anarchy/military; I'd not worry too much about that part, worrying more about *my* anarchy (from not being able to make peace -> war weariness) ...

replace Map Making with Navigation unless your planning on moding the game to move map trading back to MM.Last edited by joncnunn; January 27, 2005, 17:35.1st C3DG Term 7 Science Advisor 1st C3DG Term 8 Domestic Minister

*ahem* It's intentional. IG map trading is navigation and I'll probably leave it there; but discussion of maps and sending physical copies (screenshots) can be done whenever we decide is ok.<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

Ok – I posted a very lengthy post on this matter last night – and at about the second last line I hit that don’t-touch-me button on the side of the mouse and flipped back and lost it all.
So, I have had a day to further think about this.
To start, let’s look at it this way. The isdg just died, one of the reasons being lack of interest. In the ptwdg2, the same question has been asked. I suspect interest is waning. Monkey has pretty much survived with 3 players for awhile now. The MZO game, the last time I checked, was pretty quiet. And the first ptwdg still seems to be fairly active.
I’m just not sure there is the energy around here for another game. There has not been an overwhelming response to this thread. And, even with the best of intentions for fast game play, civ4 will be here long before this game is finished, and that very well may create issues. (Then again, looking at the number of Civ2 games still going, maybe it won’t be.)
Now, on the other hand …
This is strictly an intra-Poly game. Which avoids all the recent b.s. and unpleasantness that was associated with the recently buried game. This is a good thing. And we have some great game moderators lined up, so that is another big plus.
We are not playing continents. I have a partly-finished article on Why Continents Suck in Demo Games, so I am pleased to see the proposal as Pangaea. Either that or an island start has the best chance of creating equitable start positions, or at least on Pangaea, getting help if you are ganged up on early.
I like the multi-settler start. I can probably live with AP, but I would rather not. I say put it to a poll. I would like to see Zeus disallowed. And I agree with no ag civs.
And we need to find a way to maintain fast game play. With 6 teams, I am thinking 3 days to play a turn. Each team has an assigned 12 hour period. Or something like that. Maybe we extend it when the game gets more complex. And at the start, maybe some evening or weekend chat multi-turn sessions.
These are small teams. You do not need extensive polling and the like. Faster play is more fun than the absolutely-played-perfect game played slow.
So, I see this more as an expanded team pbem. I had intended to get some dynamic duo games going awhile back – with two players per team to cover the inevitable absences, and player disappearances (where has conmcb gone anyway??).
All this to say, I am up for it. Provided we don’t spend weeks in preparation, and we can have a firm agreement on fast play.
Now – an idea. How about we play on teams with names drawn from a hat. Or maybe an independent third party – like UnO or OPD or Vondrack, can assign six team leads, and then assign folks by random to a team. With four to a team. That mixes it up nicely.
If that doesn’t appeal to folks, then put me on the team with Paddy and CM, please. Or, if you want me to form a new team to get the game going, let me know.
Have I mentioned that we need to make sure we have a way of ensuring fast play …..
Cry havoc and let slip the dogs of war .... aw, forget that nonsense. Beer, please.

Hmm. I personally prefer set teams - chosen by the players in other words - but would be up for random teams if that's desired. I think that set teams might increase the interest factor a little (some people might only play if they are recruited by other players, like you mr. beta).
OTOH, if people are interested in playing randomly I think that's a good way to get some people to play also ... so either way.
Speed is definitely an issue - if you think 12 hour periods are long enough then we can definitely work it. In that case we'll have to make sure teams are somewhat geographically oriented ... or make sure they have turnplayers who are consistently able to play at the same time.24 hr to me is enough, as a maximum, but if 12 hour is feasible then let's go for it!
Beta, I'd love it if you formed a team - but if you'd rather take a back seat with Team Scot as i'm calling them, that's fine too. But I think you'd be an asset for recruiting certain other players ... (Rhoth? You know you want to play ... you know you do ... and for that matter, Conmcb ... wherever he is ...)
Either way let me know and i'll assign you (atm i'll put you as unassigned) to a team.Glad to have you on board!

Just as an update: I have asked 3 more people to head up teams, so unless you're one of the asked people, you'll have to be on someone's team - unless one of those 3 people chooses not to head a team (which may happen). If you have a team or part of a team ready and want to play with it, then post here and i'll give any open team slots to you in order of posting - and there is room on almost every team i'm sure so team leaders can pick you up also!<Reverend> IRC is just multiplayer notepad.

This looks real cool.I thought Civ IV was due out for Xmass. Thats plenty of time for a small quick game. Are you sure you want extra start units and AP?
I think Beta invited me to be on his team, but it looks like he needs a friend any way.Do you believe in Evil? The Nefarious Mr. Butts

Heh, with teams based stricly on availability we could lower the play-time to 8 hours
Is there a 'western europe after working hours' team around?
Edit: That timeslots would be a perfect place for another german guest-team. Perhaps Neu Neu Demogyptica?Last edited by bongo; January 26, 2005, 04:36.Don't eat the yellow snow.

If any help is needed with Administering things, I'll do what I can. I'm afraid I have to start bowing out of playing in thesebut I think I have enough experience and knowledge of the people and processes involved that I might be of some use.
Plus a DG without me doesn't seem right to me somehow.

I'm interested. I have no preference for teams but at +9 GMT so you might want to consider that when sticking me somewhere or choosing me for a team. Unless no one wants me for their team. I'm getting flashbacks to the squareball courts in elementary school. . . . .
