Yeah, they averaged four die rolls, which fundamentally screwed up the combat system. They changed it back after massive protest.

    • Im still haveing problims beliving its random - The same ships miss constantly , in 15 turns(15 game yrs) each has hit only once. Ans spearmen shouldnt be able to even dammage a modern tank! let alone take it from 4 hp to 1 hp.

      • The issue is that the game does not handle it as "bronze spear vs cobham armored combustion powered multiton vehicle", but 2*(defense bonuses) vs. 24. Meaning there is a chance for 2.something to win.

I believe it was Marathon, then they ran the 22 some odd miles back to Athens I believe to make sure they could meet the Persian fleet trying to do an end around.

          I could be wrong though

          • You're right about what happened at Marathon, con, but that was the Athenians, not the Spartans. 10 years later, the Persians invaded over land, and 300 Spartans basically clogged a narrow pass, negating the Persians' overwhelming numerical advantage until someone showed them a path around, and a detachment of Persians attacked the Spartans from behind. Still, though in the small scope Persia won, they bought enough time for the other Greeks to prepare for the coming army.

Tactical victory for the Persians, strategic defeat.

On the resources issue, I have a question I'd never thought about but this topic jiggled my brain

Ok, if I clear jungle or marsh, can the appropriate resource spawn there (let's assume that oil for instance was DUE to spawn there, but I clear the marsh first). Will it still show up when I get the appropriate tech?

And as a related follow-on, if I clear the square, and oil disappears somewhere else on the map, have I prevented the reappearance on my ex-marsh square?

Typically after the appropriate resources have shown up on the map for marsh or jungle, I clear them out to allow better city growth & production. Now I'm wondering if i should leave a few for re-appearance purposes?

              • Does nurmious units of the same typs add to your attack/defences bonus? How can I add to my bonuses?

                • A resource will spawn there even if you've cleared wetlands. Of this much, I'm sure. I don't think they'll respawn in cleared tiles, but am not positive about that.

                      • There is no real way to KNOW a resource will appear on a given tile. You can surmise one COULD appear on a tile, if that tile allows a resource (such as oil).

Yes, you can clear tiles and it has no effect on the appearence of resources. The game treats the tile for that puposes as if it was in its original form.

You can test this by making your own map.

                        • In some areas where i have a larger pop and all the advances that give me 17 culture pts a turn - my neibor - who has 1/2 my pop is shrinking my 2 ring of land around my city. How ? and can i counter that?

                          • Population doesn't seem to matter here. What matters is if their culture grows before yours. If they built the same culture buildings before you, they will always have an advantage. I think that only drastic measures can help you now. Like razing/conquering the enemy city (ugly, yes, but efficient), or building wonders in your border cities (a very bad idea, and it could take a long while to work anyway).

                            • I have read that aggregate Resources are allocated to particular tiles on the map (e.g., 5% of total tiles). This may account for resources reappearing on a tile where one (of the same or different species) previously disappeared from, which many players have witnessed.

Re culture expansion, a 1-radius culture boundary always trumps a 2-radius boundary.

                              • Thermopylae

Thermopylae! One of my favorite battles.

In 480 BC, Persians under the King of all Kings Xerxes decided to invade and they were met at Thermopylae by Leonidas and his army of 7000 men from different city-states, mostly Spartans, Thebans, and Thespians.

There, the Greeks faced 250,000 Persians including 10,000 Immortals. They fought for three days but on the second day a traitor showed Persians an alterative route. Once Leonidas found out he was betrayed, he had most of his army retreating leaving him with only 300 Spartans. They all fought to the last man.
