Whatever do you mean? I have constantly agreed with you in this thread......except your unwarranted bashing of our valiant teammates of course.

Hehe yeah SCG half the fun is in saying "you don't wanna do it like that, you wanna do it like this"......no matter how well the players play.

    • It's a shame Skanky Burns doesn't play. He'd be a natural for this setting.

      • I'm going to have to reread my posts before i post them more often and add more smilies I didn't take it as seriously as everyone seems to think i am And yes, i was hoping for a little bit of critique on my turns (That's a classic line, btw BM ) Don't forget I've read a lot of posts on here (ever notice i'm digging up threads from 1-2 years ago that i've posted in every now and then?)

*starts getting nostalgic and looks around for his T-shirt he picked up when the SGs used to appear in concert*

*adds a few more smilies for good measure*

        • SCG,

Probably not much comment/critique because there is not much to fault. Your comment asking about building EuroD on trees is something else again. You made the only choice that allows the city +1 food so it can grow. Building on trees would stymie growth as long as Depotism holds. Take a look...

Always choices though - I chose there for 2 reasons, extra food and build sooner - similar reasons i founded Middleton, build sooner (i used the trireme to transport it there) and it didn't overlap, aiming to increase trade arrows in the early going Of course a settler could have irrigated the forest before building, or maybe the 2nd settler could irrigate (it would build it sooner too) i could have built it where new capital is at the same time and set the stage for later reorganizing of the cities as our glorious rodent has done

Oh, and i almost called 'Middleton' 'Wannaweep' for the overall layout of cities (sticking with the disney theme )

wonder if i have enough smilies?

            • SCG,

Okay, clearly you missed the point.

Cities cannot grow without +1 food. EuroD supports a settler, -1 food. If you had built on trees--or plains--there would be zero food surplus -> no growth.

Building to include whales is a major ++

of course it wouldn't grow while the settlers where irrigating but in despotism settlers are only 1 food support so would just stay at 0 extra food. question there would be is the 5 turns irrigating + the turns building the settlers in lost trade and food be worth all the extra production. Since i founded it before i found trade in a hut i was trying to increase trade arrows, but i'm sure several people here would have prefered to have had built it there 1 turn later Question is, which is the better option for this game and its special circumstances?

                • Irrigating?? extra production??

Very confused by your sentence structure, SCG; I'm sure it's my fault. You hadn't mentioned irrigating or extra production before and I can't fit it to the picture from the save.

The way EuroD is now, on grass with a supported settler, there is +1 food at size 1. Grass gives two food to the city square. Building on forest (or plains, after irrigating the trees) would only give one food from the city square. Hence, zero food surplus and no growth until Democracy if you had built on the forest tile.

Yes, I know. I just restated my previous post. Hoping for clarity is all. If this doesn't help, let's just let it go.

                  • Building on plains is OK because irrigation of city square is automatic, and there would still have been 2 food. I'm going to complain because EuroD is one tile N of a 3 special location, even if it would've required 5 turns for chopping down the forest before settling.

Thanks for the correction, Stray; +1 food from building on plains. But I always thought it was 3 turns for an engineer to clear a forest, twice that for a settler. Am I misrembering that as well??

Also, if it's mutiple specials you want, there are two, mutually exclusive 4-specials sites, either on grass, just a few steps away without the time loss of deforestation. (72,104) & (74,108) if I copied the coordinates correctly.

In any case, building on forest in despotism will be very limiting for growth which was the main point.

                      • Well - if I read STYOMs post correctly no-one actually got to the Pyramids during his turns so my fear of losing the Gardens was misplaced. Which in turn means that my single minded pursuit of them was misguided and I should instead have got some more cities down and put some roads in.
Someone should immediately build The Institute in a suitably inhospitable location and I shall suffer my re-education gladly, "I must not fear the AI", "I MUST not fear the AI", "I must NOT ..."

Mea Culpa, but we do now have the Gardens

                        SG[1]

SCG - I would have built on the forest for two whales - but with hindsight (always 20-20) your choice given our peculiar rules was probably correct.

obiwan - although I would have wandered a little at the start and probably put my first city down at the site of New Capital the two Willies are well placed as feeder cities so no long term harm has been done.

LaFayette - an odd road might have been helpful, but the pressures of exploration are irresistable - that diplo you rushed made the Gardens possible - I would have been 5 shields/20g short without it.

SG[1] - still cowering behind his SDI

Yes, I could have wandered. The unknown is hard to plan or predict. The same is with the AI building the Pyramids. Would it be possible or desired to go for the Pyramids/Garden combo?

Mea Culpa? At least you started off on the right foot. I didn't even manage to do my first turn properly. You can lower your SDI now.
