Right now I am about to have completed the tech tree and roundabout the half of the entire rules file is ready. I wanted to have some event-dependent and non-buildable city improvements but it seems to me that no,no-techs as preq. only make improvements disappear from the list, which was not my intention.

For example the factory is linked to the tech "War economy" that is available for every civ at war. Since France had peace between 1630 and -35, it should get the tech by event if it destroys a unit of Habsburg, instead of researching it. But because I can not exclude improvements from the all-available tech tree (I think you cannot have a tech with a no,no-tech as preq., , or do you can?) I would simply put these special city improvements techs at the very end of the (unit tech)tree, so it will be very hard and irrational to try to get them before they appear by event.

[Edit: Everything is fine. A no,no tech as prequesist for all event-techs is not only possible but also in common use by experienced designers ]

When I've setted wonders, terrains and units in the rules I could send you my files.

After I finished the rules up to a sort of alpha status, now I want to get rid of two nasty map issues that are bothering me for proud a while. One are the specials in filler squares and the other is the non-existant stackable terrain. When I made the map I wasn't really sure which terrain types shall be stackable. Now I think it must be approximately 20.000 squares in 22.000.

To solve this issue the easiest way I will have to figure out how a tool called MapCopy does work, I guess !? Let's see.

I am definately too dumb to run MapCopy. i tried opening, I tried inserting .sav and .mp, I tried under Win98 and WinXP, I've red the Readme, read some threads in the search, re-downladed... But the exe closes one second after I opened it.

My intention was a) Taking the basic mapfile with identic coastlines as the .sav-map, and activate the MapEdit features for cleraing specials in filler squares and putting fortresses on every tile and b) Copying the improvement and ressource-surpress-information to the .sav-file I am currently working with via MapCopy. I hope the theory at last is suitable but in practice I just don't get it by myself.

It doesn't work for me either. I get the same problem.

My books can't answer the remaining questions I have especially about unit placings. I plan to go into a library of a university in Berlin during next week to fill the gaps. Got a book tip already, maybe I can buy it, too.

Most headaches cause the army size and distribution of France, the disposition of the 200.000 Spanish mercenaries outside the Netherlands, the choice for one of 3 fortress types for each city and the amount of munition units compared to the other unit types.

@Werd: What's going on? have you found some gfx or detailed informations yet ?

Well, I think to overbridge these hard times of development with joy I look forward to play some ambitious SP scens like El Aurens or Frederick the Great and maybe I get some inspiration, too.

I was not sure if you wanted me to have a go at the graphics. I will have a go tonight and get you something to work with though I cannot guarantee the quality!

I will have a look through my books and see what info I can find on troop dispositions / numbers

                    • Here's my attempt at converting the main TYW units to MGE size. Before I go on, many apologies to Gareth for butchering his work!

The musketeers look Ok, the pike aren't too bad, Some of the cavalry are acceptable. Some of the larger cavalry look a bit ropey but they should do as markers until you can find something better!

Hope they work in the game though I think the legs of some of the horses may be chopped off at the knee!

I hope having some units will help you through the tricky spell. When you are ready send me an update of the game to take a look at, if thats OK.

                            • Oh, they look far better than my conversions. Thanks very much Drew (and FL).

The cavalry units are definately in. The standing cuirassiers have many nice details to be differed, while the storming cavalry characterizes the light cuirassier excactly.

About infantry I'm not sure where to mark differences between tercios/lines and mercenary/disciplinaried.

The artillery slots surely are the non plus ultra.

                              • If you could double up the pike units and add a musketeer unit I think they would make a fine tercios.
I have no idea how to do this effectively but I have seen it done before. I only use the basic MS paint but I guess it would be easy to do with a better art program!

The other alternative would be to use much smaller graphics like John Ellis did in Bonaparte or Curtsibling's ones for his latest dictator. This way you could make proper Tercios and lines. This would mean abandoning these excellent Fairline units or compressing them to tiny proportions or starting from scratch.

I think the John Ellis units were taken from screenshots of hex based games like Waterloo Battleground 1815. I have a copy that I could use to make some screenshots if you wanted to go down that road.
