I can recommend the add-on Barbarian Invasion. The bugs of the original release have been ironed out and there are some superb user mods already - authentic late Roman units complete with Notitia Dignitatum shield patterns; right up my geeky alley

The realism mod is very good, or so I am told by my RTW-playing mate.

I got RTW when it came out, but still have never installed it.

Too much CIV2 work to do....!

Like CS, I bought RTW soon after its release. Does that mean I have to shell out bucks to get a bug-free version? How is the Rome vs Hellenistics part? Does it require a hotshot gfx card? I'm impressed fairline — is there a period of history for which you don't hold a PhD in geekdom?

Looks like the hardware requirements of CivIV will force me do what I've intended all along. Don't get CivIV until:

            A. Scenarios become available.
            B. Bugs are ironed out.
            C. More scenarios become available.

Oh well, I will have console myself with the thought that I won't waste money like I did in getting SMAC and CivIII before there was much player feedback.

              lol!

Yep. Shelling out several hundred bucks to "upgrade" a system that already works just fine, in order to run what-may-well-be-a-turkey-if-past-performance-is-any-indicator just doesn't seem too wise.

I just installed it. I always hate the new versions of Civ at first. This is no exception. With Civ2, I got over it. With Civ3, I never did. This looks very animated, cartoonish even, and very complex, and it runs poorly on my machine. My feeling is, I can't be bothered right now, maybe next week.

I think the free patch available for the original version gets rid of the bugs.

The Seleucids and Macedonians are covered pretty well, and as long as you find suitable terrain for your realistically slow phalanx you can whoop those Roman's asses. The Ptolemaics are laughably portrayed as Middle Kingdom Egyptans, albeit with a phalanx, but you can get rid of the jarring visual innaccuracies, again courtesy of user-made mods.

As for the performance - yes it requires a pretty flashy pc and gfx card, although the visuals are scaleable so it may run on slower machines. Give it a try

Just thought I'd post that civ 4 is actually looking good to me. I've played only two games so far though and lost both (civ 3 on the other hand I never liked even when I first tried it out).

What if we made our own game...............
although it would probably take forever to get a workable beta and we would need quite a few programmers but.......

Thanks for the frank post, Henrik. That's a relief that its first impression is better than C3's. An SLer's frank review holds my interest more than most others. Do you think you might dabble with modding it? Keep us posted.

Between cIV and RTW, I may actually have to shake down Santa for a better gfx card. Umm, that is after I check whether my main chip is sufficient for these games.

Pssst B_E, I think that's a reason why the FreeCiv crew posts here. I suspect that you won't find a program more amenable to our suggestions.

Well if the Freeciv guys ever give us an event option then we'd be golden.

What has happened to Freeciv adding events? The Wishlist thread you started there ends rather abruptly at the beginning of '05?

Well, I'm PO'ed that I'm gonna have to get some kind of upgrade if my computer is going to run Civ4.
