How did you guys get on the invite list? Is Big Brother Firaxis watching the SL to keep tabs on you scenario meisters?

If so they could use some of your scenario-making genius judging by Civ III...

      Too true . . . . .

      Yeah, Gareth, they could.

      However . . . . .

Mod-ability, sadly, isn't on the high priority list. Sales is the key for the corp-boys, and lowest common denominator is the answer for them.

We just aren't a large enough demographic.

If it can't be easily modded, I'm not interested. Vanilla historical/empire-builders slapped together by what amount to amateurs don't work for moi.

      Btw, nice Napoleonic unit set.

Actually, one of the things that is not a bonus for me is the spiffy 3D gfx. Besides shelling out the bucks for a compatible card, doesn't that also mean 10-100x more icons per unit? Fairline, you think you're in demand now! The gfx strikes me as more of a challenge to C4 modding than Python.

I don't think so. If it's actual 3D that would mean just one graphic (well, disregarding animations for a moment). But it would be a 3D model you'd have to draw rather than a 2D graphic. So it's probably just as bad.

Yay! modeling then skinning then shadowing the animating!

Point taken about 3D gfx, but is there an option to disregard cIV animations? I'm sadly ignorant about the game.

Dale posted a link to the manual thingy ...

I can't open it right now though (Crappy *fnargle* Linux! ).

I probably know less than you do.

Sigh, I've been looking through the Civ4 forums today and I have to say that I'm glad I spend most of my time here.

I have this weird aversion to Noobs posting just to post. Just look at the civ 4 creation forum. There is already a thread started that begins with: "Some brave hardcore modder out there should make a Middle Earth map+scenario. If anyone wants to do it I'll help with the details. Though not until mid-november. then I'm done with my exams"

Um, excuse me, you just thought that you'd throw out the idea, even though it's been worked on in almost every civ title game? You have no time, but why not suggest that someone put in a couple hundred hours modding the game? Ugh. I hate it when a new game comes out.

                          Yes and no

As long as there is sufficient variety in the number of 3D models provided by the vanilla game (and access to the skin file format) then 'new' units can be created by reskinning. I've done quite a bit of this with Rome Total War and it's considerably easier than creating a new sprite in a game like civ III, or even a single-frame unit for civ2. A quick perusal of the RTW forums will reveal that there is a host of 3D-savvy modellers willing and able to produce new models, given again that a popular 3D format is used by the game producers.

I can't help feeling though that the time and effort required to create an entirely new scenario, with the level of flexibility given by civ2, will be immense, as Exile suggests.

Why do you say that, aside from the obvious idiocy of some of the CivIV forum posts?

I know virtually nothing about the game, but I'll certainly be buying it and playing it with an open mind. After all CivIII wasn't that bad
