  • Another in-game shot:

PNG of the same image. Larger, but better colors and less blury.

I quickly made a city wall for it to see how it turned out. Each individual city size can have it's own city wall gfx. Feel free to come with suggestions on city walls, both for this city style and the others. Maybe they could grow larger as the city becomes larger?

    • Gee whiz.

      Anyways, here's a list of GPL-compatible licences.

I recommend the Clarified Artistic Licence. It's short and non-viral.

Licence is relevant. Installing Freeciv on Debian Linux is extremely easy -- type apt-get freeciv on the command line or launch your package manager of choice. However, the Debian folk are very fond of GPL and including non-compliant software in their official directory is a strict no-no.

Similar issues exist with other brands of *nix.

And now, back to our regularly scheduled programme.

      • Walls around modern day cities just don't look right. Maybe a bunker graphic would work better.

Is the population number always located in the place that it is shown at?

Yeah, I agree that city walls can look a bit strange around modern cities, but it is important that it is easily identifiable and visible. In addition a city wall doesn't use much very much space in the tile or extent to far into surrounding tiles. I'm not sure a bunker would satisfy those criterias, but you're welcome to draw some examples.

The population number can be moved. Right now it's aligned for the old city gfx, I'll move it to the right.

          • Well, I did create a bigger city wall based on the classic bunker design awhile back.

Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

            • @ Smiley, OT

I have tried to convert the excellent cities to 64x48 you have posted in this thread. Needless to say it did not go too well. As beautiful as your cities are, they simply will not fit without heavy editing which I feel detracts from the quality of the originals, due to the rather shoddy resizing on my part.

The following is an example of the work so far in TOT:

I would like to ask for your kind permission to continue to convert FreeCiv cities into 64X48 if you are unable to do so yourself. If this proposition offends you then I will immediately stop with sincerest apologies, and will not release the cities which have thus far been converted.

Many scenarios creators look forward to using your high quality creations in MGE/TOT. Please keep making these cities, is all.

              • I don't mind, and those don't look that bad. Are they resized or recentered?

Wait on the third size, there's an update coming.

                • In the case of sizes 1 and 2, recentered. For size 3 some areas had to cropped, readjusted or removed entirely to fit within the specified boundaries. Fortunately since there was not much resizing involved there is no pixel distortion.

Am eagerly awaiting size 4 and updated size 3.

What about including anti-tank obstacles such as those present in a couple of WW2 scens? maybe with some small bunkers on the corners...

                    • Here's the updated size 3. The blue building in back has been given vertical lines which scale better, and the factory's shadow side made darker.

City Size 3 is going to need another update- those pink projects don't fit with the rest of the cities.

Yeah, that might work. I think the bunkers need to be on the long sides though, because of the space available.

@ Smiley: looks very nice, I think that last one is my favorite so far.

Could be a good idea, I'll play around with some of Captain Nemo's bunkers&hedgehogs.

Aha! Is that the university you were designing for Osaka?

It looks just as good in the comic. Unfortunately I think converting this is impossible without detracting from the quality, and I simply don't have the heart to slice apart such a masterpiece.

                              • Not quite, though some of the buildings are based on those in the surrounding area.

"Umejuku" is a mishmash of Umeda and Shinjuku, the highrise business districts of Osaka and Tokyo. The three buildings in the back are from Tokyo, the one on the right from Osaka, and the long one in front is a generic train station / department store, a common building type in Japan.

Version 1.20 of "Illinois City", with the pink toned down to a beige. I'm still not fully satisfied with this one, I'll see how it looks again after completing #5.
