    • The resource squares are almost done. As a teaser here's my idea for the grassland resource. I find a couple of rocks far more distinct that the "green pizza slice" we're used to in Civ2.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

Well, I'm about to move back to the city again.... So, if you could lend a hand (and a good eye) . I'll show you later what sort of work is left for the cities.

          • finally, the resources are here

Well, as promised here are the new resources with the old ones as comparison. most have been replaced or updated.
There are a few squares left in the terrain1.png like waste and the horse square but I'll leave those for later.

Some resources like the oil, fish and coal resources are fine as they were so they been left mostly the same. But if you have a good idea...

Thanks, I'll show you what I need.

                  (see city examples below)

As you've probably noticed this FC tileset will work with a higher (150%) resolution that the normal one in Civ2. 96x48 (96x72 for the city tiles) instead of 64x48. That means you've got a bigger standard square to work with but you also need to fill it. You could try increasing the size of other graphics but scaling the graphics to 150% doesn't work so well due to extrapolation (you need to create 3 pixels where there are 2). You always end up with jagged edges and blocky graphics.

Luckily, for the units and the resources this isn't really necessary. At the standard resolution (64x48) they fit in quite well but the cities look a bit out of place in those big tiles and with (150%) extrapolation they look horrid!

So, the city graphics need to be upgraded. My plan is to use Bebro's original city designs and upgrade them to 96x72.
There are two ways to do this:
                  1) Work with the standard graphics and spread them out a bit
                  2) Enlarge by 150% and improve by hand afterwards

We don't need a full set but I was planning to do about 5 different styles as a start. The industrial and modern era are already done so I need 3 other ancient citystyles (greek, rome etc..) as well.

                  Cheers,

                  CapTVK

                  • i think spread out option is best,
I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!
Rules are like Egg's. They're fun when thrown out the window!
Difference is irrelevant when dosage is higher than recommended!

                    • I prefer 96x72 plus. I think it would be good to use the additional space to make the houses a bit larger. Now they are far to tiny imo, allowing for very little detail.

                      • I don't think the city graphics should be quite so much "head-on". They should be a little more isomtric in perspective. Playing with the ones that are already in freim96 I found it a bit odd. But, I suppose this is something you have to play around with to find the "optimal" perspective.

The are two main streams in City designs : The classic Civ2 frontal (head-on) perspective design and the true isometric design, like the cities done by Captain Nemo. Bebro's city designs, which I may use as a base, are classic designs.

Both designs have pro's and cons. True isometric has the advantage of fitting in with the landscape while the classic design is headon but with a good design makes it easier to add more intricate details. This can be done in isometric as well but now you have to keep things in perspective, literally. Instead, perspective is done here by adding roads, shadows and creating depth with smaller buildings.

Is one better than the other? It depends, true isometric cities fit in with isometric tiles while the classic design allow more freedom for aesthetics. What should a city represent? Should it stand out or form a part of the landscape in the game?

YS, the first design is only for the first fase. In the later fases they get huge! Here's the Egyptian "plus"-citystyle
