  • I think most of the units in your draft looks quite good now.

I'm a bit unsure about the truck. And the elephant looks a bit weird.

I think it would be good to go over the shadows and make them have the same same look when you have decided on all units.
We are the apt, you will be packaged.

I think I see the problem. The front weel at the front is covered. The elephant is one of few the units that hasn't been tweaked. I'll take a look.

Meanwhile here's some of the designs I did for the explorer. If ain't a penguin I'm aking for the "indiana jones"- type.
Skeptics should forego any thought of convincing the unconvinced that we hold the torch of truth illuminating the darkness. A more modest, realistic, and achievable goal is to encourage the idea that one may be mistaken. Doubt is humbling and constructive; it leads to rational thought in weighing alternatives and fully reexamining options, and it opens unlimited vistas.

      • Ok, here is the 2nd draft.

        I have:
        • improved the elephant unit
        • replaced the wheel on the truck
        • Added a worker unit (Freeciv also has workers besides settlers)
        • replaced the explorer

Things like the shadows and small corrections I'll leave till later.

        • Oh, it's a penguin!

Not only couldn't I tell that's what it was supposed to be, but now that I know, I agree with St Leo. Fantasy and/or joke graphics should be mods, not the default graphics. So I think your camel with the penguin should also be adjusted. As you say, you can always add the joke units at the bottom.

I like the "Indiana Jones" explorer and I also like the 16th-C explorer. Maybe keep both and let user choose?

          Mountains look nice!

Btw, I know how time-consuming this must be. You're doing great!

          I still prefer these bulldozers

          • Nah, caterpillar-bulldozers are the way to go

            And I like penguins

            • is there a barbarian leader graphic, if not make the barbarian leader graphic a barbarian penguin or "Conan the Librarian"
I am not delusional! Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna go dance with the purple wombat who's playing show-tunes in my coffee cup!

              • I agree that a penguin is bad for suspension of disbelief. And I also think this holds for the "GPL" text on the freight car. The nuke icon on the nuclear unit will not work well with the hp bar, I think. The paratrooper unit does not have a parachute? Other than that, it is starting to shape up really nice!

Thanks , most of those units also have a normal alternative.so replacing them isn't that much trouble. For the explorer I'm more akin to the "Indiana Jones"-type. Not only because he looks good but what he represents: a rugged explorer/prospector venturing into the unknown.

The explorer is quite a durable and useful unit in Freeciv (you normally start out with one) and can be useful for a longtime. I never build many explorers in Civ2 but because FC gives you one at the start it reminds you of their usefulness. A cheap, defensive and all-terrain unit for exploring.

I'm still looking for some good hills though. RF comes with some excellent terrain but sadly, no hills.

Penguin units can be moved to the bottom row, no problem. I've also got standard units for them.

The nuke and paratrooper have a symbol to set them apart. They both have (very) special abilities and I would like to keep that apparent at first glance.

Plus, the nuke would otherwise look like some outgrown cruisemissile. The paratrooper doesn't have a parachute because most units I've seen sofar just don't look good if you have to fit in a parachute as well.
Nemo made the right decision in 2nd front by replacing them with a trooper and the basic "symbol" of the US Airborne. You can't see the symbol clearly on the draft because it's almost white on a whitebackground (look closely). It's very distinct in- game however.

As for the truck....No metajokes at all? The "GPL" truck also appeared in Tim Smith's Hires set.

Looks better. There is still something that bothers me about that elephant though...

It's ears should be bigger and a bit further back, slighly thicker legs and it's belly shouldn't be that square

                            • updated the elephant. (If you want potbellied elephants get your own )
                            • replaced the caravan unit
                            • moved the emblem for the nuke so it's slightly under the missile
                            • did some shadows tweaking. I've thought about adding alpha (transparency) levels to the shadows. But at this stage it isn't really useful because there is no real support for them yet.
