The Dance of Civilizations [Diplo Game] [Organization Thread Pt1]
Quite possibly everyone has everything or will have, what I did not like is the race feeling to get the techs asap before it's too late.
I'm not saying that everyone should get every tech for free, they still need to find a trade partner who can give them the techs (don't forget no tech brokering so you can get the tech only from those who had researched it)
Current model: race for the techs, planning is a possibility but what we see is mostly random trades with anyone we can
proposed system: no need to hurry, if your friends have the tech you need they can give it to you even if you cant offer as many tech they have. planning still usefull who research what since no tech brokering so only researched techs can be traded away.
There were several techs I didn't have and only a few techs I had that others needed. The only civ that had banking who I could trade with was Britannia, the only old tech they needed from me was paper. I made the offer, and they actually came online while I was. But the pop-up window from Persia came first, so they traded for paper. Now I had nothing to give Britannia. Since they were the only small civ who could give me banking I was now out of luck.
Also, no small civ has philosophy. All the civs who have philosophy don't need anything from me.

i think we have to work out why this rule was put in place.
if it is jsut to give the smaller civs in score a boost to catch up then that not owkring at moment, as most people trade with the bigger civs so they get boost in score too.
i still beleive no one should trade with the bigger civs. (bigger as in score)
but i also beleiuve that no change t othe rule should be done till next game. too late now.
Korea has only managed one free trade all game, but depsite tihs we have nearly all the techs from the old eras shorlty after the new eras come as it taks jsut 2-3 turns to reasearch.
Ah, banking and paper are also free for trade. Good to know.... 3 TURNS AGO!!!

Yeah, it was kinda unexpected anyway that we so soon entered the industrial age.. who would had thought that Byzantium so easily share its best technology even with Persia? I wonder...

You see India - being friendly and trustworthy rather than being a warmongering vampire queen demanding world capitulation - can bring rewards. You should try it
I can confirm what Byzantium says.
Being friendly does pay off indeed.
Now be gone.

I agree with Ozzy basically. I think it was my suggestion a while ago which he refers to in 1951 that we should just go for free trade for these techs.
I think we have to be clear as to the point of it, and not get distracted by secondary effects.
The way I see it that point is to put a floor underneath the degree of technological division that can emerge between the most advanced and less advanced nations. We want the less advanced nations to these techs.
Secondary effects are the fact that advanced nations may plan their tech path to avoid one or two and get them free, and the possibilities of the trade in these techs contributing to some good diplo (which is in effect what RP is arguing).
But for me the secondary effects don't matter much in comparison. Yes we all have to accept that the advanced nations gain a little. Yes it ends up being an completely ooc mechanism. But I don't care - we just need a system which guarentees the nations get the techs. And they way we do that is make them freely tradeable.
In terms of implementation, we shouldn't change this immediately because people will have planned on the basis of the current rules. However, we shoudl change it on the next era transition. So when 4 nations become modern, all the techs from ancient through to renaissance become completely freely tradeable.
That is my proposal. Its not perfect, but I believe it delivers the main thing we want, which is probably the best we can do.
(And without wanting to get at poor persia, I think he illustrates the weakness in RP's argument. Persia was saying "We all need to use the system more clever" but then finds out he has been completely dense in not realising banking and paper are medieval. So if even a very clever and successful player like persia can't really 'be clever' with the current rules, I think we change them rather than saying 'the rules are good if only we were all geniuses').

Nah.. I've been told vampires are popular novadays.. but you know what? alright, I go back to plan A. Lets make peace and sing together.. this evilish madness was clearly a mistake, I didn't mean to... So from now on no big evil India, but a small lovely country. Sha'Tao will be the religion of LOVE, no one would resist it, but if they do we will still love them and leave them be..
And if you happen to see us building rocket silos you should not think of any bad.. most likely we just preparing some fireworks for the next festival..really.. *try not to laugh*

Poor Persia is being deceptive. They know quite well those techs are available for free trade, they offered paper to Britannia as soon as they became available for trade. And messed up my trade.
