It's not unrealistic, happens in RL quite similary
while it's true that at a point a backward civ could skip researching, upgrading is very costly, and this may be the only way for them to be able "effecting" the game at a particular level.
I've always said that small (backward) civs are too can participate and be important in the alliance vs alliance wars-wouldnt be so if that war is fought by tanks and the best unit of that small civ is musketmen.
So (especially at end game) I think it's perfectly normal if the small civ slows its research to be able upgrading their units and have a more modern military that count (must be realistic: they wont launch a spacehip anyway, just like 99% of the real world countries won't)
As for the "silent" interventions: it's up to the civs how they react on it. Gifting units to one's enemies is quite the same declaring war on them, upgrading units also could be a casus belli.

Why is that not realistic? It happens all the time!
America is giving weapons to the enemies of the Taliban, Russia gives rockets to Iran, to name just two examples.

And since weapons you give away can be used against you (Al Qai'da vs America) all big nations won't be keen to give too much away.

Upgrading costs money, someone has to pay for it. It comes with natural balance
The strength of a nation can only be expanded. A small nation can't become a superpower suddenly.
Force is always beside the point when subtlety will serve

Thats part of the upgrade, I can't see your point. I don't have to know how to build a tank to be able drive one.

                    • I'm sorry for this outburst. I was a bit annoyed with other non-civ stuff and let it bleed through. I do feel that the discussions are getting to a point where we are not gaining any improved gameplay any more and are only venting frustrations.

                      • That depends on how you interpretate the tone of the written text
All posts above can be read as if it's a frustrated argument, but if you switch something in your head, it can also read as a couple of people who discuss game mechanics in a relaxed way.

The latter would be good, the first would not be good.

But Rome is right, it makes no sense to discuss all this now. New Gamerules can only be applied on new games, let's thus not discuss them in this thread which is about DoC.

                        @Korea:
too many loopholes if that what the game about, wow

                        Don't worry, I wasn't talking about a loophole.
You can just cover up unit gifting by giving not too much at the same time, especially during turns you just finished building a lot of new units. So don't worry, there aren't more exploits / loopholes, only smart gaming strategies here

Lots of here to show Rome that this is not a frustrated post
