    • Sic semper tyrannis!

      The first Roman consul

As Aelius reasserted power, and killed off or imprisoned the senators that had ruled Rome for several years, he in many ways reduced the totalitarian elements of the state, and the terror it inflicted upon its citizens. Many historians attribute his ability to slowly decrease the levels of opression as a key element in maintaining the ad hoc system that governed Rome at the time for such a long period.

But this could not last, as Aelius slowly deteriorated and as his paranoia and megalomania he began stepping up the pressure on his opposition and even the few remaining Senators again. The aristocratic elements of the state, which had had a chance to regroup in this time and much of the priesthood sought change. Some advocated the return of a monarchy while others craved for something new.

As Caelius withdrew his support of Dictator Aelius and announced that the 3rd Legion would be marching to Rome to dethrone him, Aelius was cut down on the senate floor, killed by several conspiring senators. The last to stab him where Lucius Junius Brutus wile shouting the words: "Sic Semper tyrannis!"

Lucius Junius Brutus was an intelligent man with a natural talent for politics. He cleverly feigned slow-wittedness to escape the attention of Aelius as a potential threat . The senators immediately after the death of Aelius, asked a Oracle who would be the next ruler of Rome. They needed to act quickly in order to prevent Caelius, who was already on his way to Rome, from simply assuming the mantle of Dictator. The Oracle responded the next person to kiss his mother would become king. Brutus interpreted "mother" to mean the Earth, so he pretended to trip and kissed the ground.

He was elected the first Consul of Rome by the senate. He vowed to finish the transition to republic. According to Liv:

""Omnium primum avidum novae libertatis populum, ne postmodum flecti precibus aut donis regiis posset, jurejurando adegit, neminem Romae passuros regnare. (h) …
      (h) Compulit ad decernendum addito juramento, fore ut non permitterent quenquam in posterum Romae regem esse."

      (translation
"His [Brutus'] first act was to make the people, while the state of liberty was still fresh upon their tongues, swear a solemn oath never to allow any man to be king in Rome, hoping by this means to forestall future attempts by persuasion or bribery to restore the monarchy."

This would later be viewed as the first part of the Mos maiorum a unwritten constitution of the Romans that developed in the coming centuries.

To: All the civilized nations of Terra (part of his speech made to the people)
From: Lucius Junius Brutus and the Senate and People of Rome

Let all men know: Rome is free from its tyrants! We call all peoples of sound mind and civil nature to follow our example and shed themselves of their kings and unlawful masters!

We announce a bright new age of unity and freedom! May an empire of peace spread across the world. The gods look upon our endeavor with favor, with Jupiter and Romulus on our side who is against us? Yes brothers we are free and let us swear never to let the scourge of kings or dictators who would be kings to stain Rome's reputation. We must be ever watchful against all such beasts among men. Such wicked wolves who see all others as sheep.

The law and only the law shall be a limit to the freedom of Roman citizens. Any consul any general who seeks power in Rome must recognize this.

We now ask that the governments of the world recognize the New Roman government as legitimate and to send their representatives to our capital, any refusal to do so will be seen as a desire to restore the Monarchy or its Tyrannical offspring the Dictatorship , and will be considered grounds for war.

Portugal publically declares its recognition of the New Roman government. We are pleased to be the first country to recognize your government. We wish you all the best! Portugal will be more than happy to send its representative to the city of Rome, this will happen only after we feel it is safe again for our diplomats to enter and exit your country. The torture of our last diplomat still haunts the diplomatic circles in Korecom.

          • In the Korecom Palace.

Marco feeling happy about the day’s good work, decided to sit down and finish his latest poem:

He looks out on the ocean deep
            So far beyond the blue
            His mind remembers yesterday
Of a love so pure and true
Of when she stole his heart away
When they met upon the lea
For the first in his weary life
So deep in love was he

He longs to hold her tight once more
Like he did so long ago
And wallow in her every charm
            That set his heart aglow
            To lose himself forevermore
            For all eternity
As the ocean sings a silent song
So deep in love is he

He dreams of times perhaps to come
When they will be as one
            Looking out across the waves
            To view the setting sun
He whispers soft a prayer of hope
That once more he will see
The woman that makes him realize
So deep in love is he

              • General Han Gong had a lot on his mind; he was called by the new Emperor Sejong, who Han had never met, to Pyongyang for a private meeting. Han Gong had no idea what this could be, but rumors ran rampant in the camp that General Bae had retired. Han had no idea why he was called upon, and it was clear from the letter that the meeting was to be completely private, so not even the Imperial Commander would know...

TO: General Han Gong, Commander of the Northern Armies
                FROM: Emperor Sejong of Goguryeo

                Brave General,

New information has come to light, and I request your presence in Pyongyang following the demise of the Aztecs. All of my ministers will be sent to Seoul and will not be present. This information must be kept with great secrecy. You will tell no-one, not even your superiors, and this includes both the Imperial Commander and the Foreign Minister. Breaking this code of silence will result in your death. Please make haste, and good luck dispatching the Aztecs.

                - Sejong of Goguryeo
The tenor of the message bothered Han Gong greatly. Despite his uneasiness, his soldiers' morale was fantastic, and the Korean army was prepared to gain victory over the Aztecs. This would mark the first time any Korean army attacked a foreign city (most Korean wars were internal, and among other Korean villages), and in spite of Han Gong's troubled mind, victory here would certainly mark him as a great General in the eyes of the military and thus the Imperial court.

The General slowly rode atop his horse to the front lines, he was flanked by Captain Jeong Jung-bu, who was sent by the Imperial Commander Shin Sung himself. "So General" Jeong began "Today is the day!"

The General wasn't paying attention, he shook his head "I'm sorry Captain, my mind is elswhere."

"I said today is the day, this will be a great victory for us, you will surely return to Seoul a great hero." Jeong replied.

"Nothing is assured Jeong" the General said "These Aztecs caused great damage throughout the Kingdom, much of it has yet to be repaired. We should not take them lightly."

"General, we have them outnumbered nearly two to one, we have their weaponry outclassed greatly, this won't be a contest, I believe they will be routed with little casualties on our side." Jeong said proudly "Our warriors are the finest in the world!"

"The world may be greater than we know Jeong." He said, they finally reached the front lines, "I suppose they want a speech?"

"Perhaps" Jeong said "You didn't prepare one?"

"No, I haven't, I've had a lot on my mind lately. I can wing it..."

                Meanwhile, Pyongyang...

"And this is the Greek response, apparently the Maya were mistaken, I am not sure what our reaction should be to this." Hae Mosu said to Emperor Sejong and General Jumong.

"I say we say nothing!" Jumong said "The Greeks have given us an offer, we take it, but we don't react, there is no need for us to get involved in this matter. It is a Greek and Mayan matter, not a Korean one. We know our position here."

"Perhaps Jumong, but my sister is married to Maya, therefore their issues become our issues. It isn't in our interest for Maya and Greece to contend in this manner, even as slight as this issue." Sejong said "Besides that, Greece has given us great gifts, and to simply sit idly by would be disrespectful. We need to settle these areas soon though."

"And your excellency" Hae Mosu said "You have an invitation from Princess Daemok as well, she says it is a shame you haven't met before."

Sejong thought for a moment, the revelation Bae told him still fresh in his mind "We shall wait for word from General Han Gong, I want the Aztec problem crushed before we go to Tikal. I want to arrive there victorious, I will bring some of the captured Aztecs as gifts to the royal family."

"A splendid idea sir, they may use the captives at their upcoming festival." Hae Mosu said.

"I like the way they handle their captives" Genearl Jumong said "It sends a good message."

"Shall I prepare a response to the Greek-Mayan issue?" Hae Mosu asked.

"No, I will speak on it with Alexander personally and privately, the same will go with Pacal during my trip to Tikal. There is no need to send letters, they don't have the same effect that an Emperor's words would have, don't you agree?"

                "Of course your excellency..."

                Moments Later, Aztec Territory...

General Han Gong called the assault, the Korean army quickly ran into the town and destroyed the Aztec armies therein. The Koreans didn't realize it, but this enemy was nothing compared to the ones that ravaged the Korean countrysides and destroyed the village of Wonsan. The Aztec people had been overcome by famine, leaving their population not only weak, but unable to tend to their copper mines and thus unable to create the axes they famously used against the Koreans centuries ago. Many of them began taking the mystical mushrooms, used in Maya religious ceremonies, to get their minds off of their terrible famine. The entire Aztec society broke down, partly due to drug abuse, and partly due to cannibalism, and partly due to famine (although it is hard to say whether the cannibalism caused the famine or vice-versa). General Han's forces hardly lost any men, maybe one hundred, which only represented a small fraction of his army. The Aztecs are thought to have lost upwards of 100,000 men that day (although the true number was probably around 90,000).

Captain Jeong Jung-bu rode up alongside his General, "General, the leader of this camp has been captured, what shall we do?"

"Hold him, try and keep as many captives as possible, we are to deliver the prisoners to the Maya." Han Gong replied.

                "The Maya sir?"

                "Yes Captain, keep them."

                "And the city sir?"

Han Gong thought about it, and he remembered fighting the Aztecs at Pyongyang, he rembered how many of his men were killed, and he remebered Gang Jo. Then it occured to him; Sejong must have learned that Han Gong knew about Gang Jo and Sinjeong!

"Sir, what shall we do with the city sir?"

How did he find out? The only people who knew, who were still alive that is, where he and Bae Hyeongyeong.

                "General?"

"I'm sorry, what did you ask?" Han Gong quickly collected his composure.

"The city sir, what shall we do?"

"Plunder it, and raze it to the ground!" Han Gong replied.

                • Alexander walked circles in his room.
"Still no response from the Mayans?" he asked.
"No Alexander, nothing" his advisor said.

"I'm growing tired of these Mayan people.
I'm showing my graciousness by giving them an important strategical spot far far far away from their own cities, and they keep complaining that they want an even better spot. What do these people expect? Do they expect me to give them Sparta and Athens as well?" Alexander angry said.

"Well, sir, these Mayan people may be a bit greedy indeed, but we must keep them pleased with us." his advisor said.

"WHY? I do not fear them. My latest spy reports tell me that our armies are about twice as large as theirs. And soon Sparta, Corinth and Thebes will deliver new troops as well. These cities are on full troop-construction right now. Maybe we should keep the possibility open that these troops are needed in the east." Alexander said.

"We have a peace treaty with the Mayans..." the advisor tried to say.

"We have no peace treaty since the Mayans have never accepted. All they did was complaining and arguing. They are never satisfied. I tell you, if these Mayans will not accept our GRACIOUS GIFT without more complains soon, then I'm going to give it to the Japanese people after all." Alexander furiously said.

"The Mayans are not going to like that, sir..."

"The Mayans should know that I start to stop liking them if they continue to behave this way. We give a huge gift and all they do is complain. I'm done talking about this issue."

"Hmmmm, still no real sign from the Romans.... I still wonder if they do exist outside the imagination of the Piercians. Give it to me." Alexander said.

Alexander read the message about the new Roman governament.

"Hmmm" he said "I don't understand anything about this new form of a governament. Is this Brutus also mister 'senate' and 'the people' or are there multiple leaders in Rome? I wonder for how long such a thing will last. Maybe the Piercians have a very rich fantasy. Anyway, they intend to live up to past agreements, therefore I will recognize them. Send the Piercians, uh the Romans a letter that we will recognize their new government and that we will send a galley north soon to meet them. This galley will carry our representatives."

The messenger quickly left Sparta to the north to bring the message to the Piercians.
