Lucius Junius Brutus was worried. Dangerus ideas of "Monotheism" had begun to spread and several important people began to question the validity of the old polytheistic beliefs, claiming that there were not a multitude of gods but a single God.
This undermined the foundation of the Roman Republic which was said to enjoy the special favor of Quirinus, Romulus ascended. He was belived to be the true celestial king of Rome, and that earthly Gods where anathema since the death of the last legally elected king.
Also each of their Roman parties and districts claimed they enjoyed the special support of that or the other minor diety. Would the belief in a single God imply a single earthly ruler as well. Would a concept of Divine Right appear, perhaps producing tyranny?
No, Rome could not allow this heresy to spread even if the single God was said to be the creator and Quirinus his only son, which was rather confusing since they where supposed to somehow still be "one god", truly to make sense of such belief one would need a whole new branch of knowledge. A theology? The very thought of what their debates would sound like made him chuckle.
The Roman priesthood which was once firmly part of the Roman state (the king was also the pontifex maximus and the king was crowned by an important priest) was now a mostly unofficial assembly.
Lucius would organize the Roman religion. The reforms would no doubt cause turmoil perhaps even some resistance from several of the religious factions within Judaism who claimed the right to heterodoxy. But it was necessary to establish just what
the Roman state religion was and to ensure religion's place would be well defined lest it serve the monarchist's purposes.
