        Meeting

The Emperor finally arrived at the city of Meeting. He was led to the townhall where a big round table was disposed for the ambassadors from all civilisations of the world. He stood next to that table when he looked around. Roman delegates were wearing long white tunicas, guarded by two pretorians in quite humble armors. He cought on of them admiring his impressibe and gem-covered imperial armor. Right next to them stood Wyandots in tradtional outfits, decorated by many exotic feathers, bones and stones, smiling at him when their looks met. The phalanxes were still engulfed in their heavy armor, but had removed their helmets. They were waiting with discipline for the meeting to begin.

"Ambassadors," he began, "I am glad to see all of you in this place. Other civilisations are expected to join us soon. We have gathered here because we all believe that words are a powerfull tool that can change as great things as the whole world. The open-borders agreement you all have made with my Empire were a first step towards making this event possible. I am happy to announce that my Empire still has silk that I am willing to trade for anybody who has an interresting offer to make. Horses are also available. If all of you could begin with giving a list of ressources that you are willing to trade, so that we may all supply our respective people with the goods of this world."

Portugal is 4-5 days away. We want to thank the Natives for building that road going south, it is speeding our travel much.

We bring with us plenty of Portuguese fur, wine and the most advanced military technology to date to sale or trade. Once we arrive we will present the weapon invented by us and open a local PO BOX in Meeting to receive any offers people may have for us.

The Senate and People of Rome welcome your ambassadors, the first to be received since the purification of our nation.

We bewailed the fact that the former corrupt rulers of Rome deceived and impoverished not only us, but also it seems you. We share your pain at the loss of your gold - we too have lost much. We must all bear our losses with stoicism trusting that the true gods will reward us plentifully in the future.

As a sign of our sadness at your loss we would be happy to turn over to your ambassadors the severed head of one of these bandits whose stink we have recently swept from the Senate. At least your people will then see that the People of Rome have brought judgment on those who stole your gold.

                Tribune Hieronymus
Alcetas angrily read the message from Hieronymus.
"Those barbaric Romans....!" he said when his face turned red out of anger. "Only barbarians don't live up to their promises!"

He ordered two messengers. To the first he said: "Go, search for the Portuguese people. Tell their leader that we must discuss the issue of these Romans. I learned from foreign tales that we apparently share an issue with the Romans. Maybe we can solve this issue together. Make sure that the Romans will not learn from your mission. I order you chose dead above leaking your message to the Romans, when you get captured."

To the 2nd messenger he said:
"Bring the following message to Rome, make sure it arrives quickly and bring the Roman response to me as soon as possible. The future of Sparta depends on it."

Then he whispered..... "We did always respect the Romans. Apparently they do not want to return this respect..."

Then he dictated the message to Rome:

                Tribune Hieronymus,

I have received your message and I am disappointed about the fact that you apparently aren't willing to supply Sparta with gold any more, despite promises made by your predecessors.

We were willing to cooperate when Rome was in need of our cooperation. Now you aren't willing to fulfil the promises you have made.

Once again I ask you to live up to the promises, made by Rome in the past. We have respected our deal, I ask you to do so, like civilized nations are used to.

                Alcetas, King of Sparta
When the 2nd messenger had left he ordered his army-leaders and told them to start producing new armies in all cities.
"Make sure that our special Phalanx units will carry the mellee promotion. They may need it!" he said.

The leader of the Spartan delegation addressed the Emperor:

"Hail to Emperor of the Persian lands!

We want to thank you for your hospitality to hold this meeting!
Our journey through the Persian lands was perfect. The Persian infrastructure helped us to move to Meeting as quickly as possible.

You supplied us with everything we needed on the road.
I will bring word to Sparta about Persia being one of the finest nations I have visited.

There have been tensions between Sparta and Persia in the past. Your hospitality will certainly end these hostilities forever!
Alcetas sends you his very special greetings. He also invites you to visit Sparta one day. He promises that you will be welcomed like you have welcomed us, though he can't promise that the beauty of Sparta can come even close to the beauty of Persia. Sparta is a nation of power and production, rather then a nation of beauty.

There's one thing I have to address first.
I have heard from Sparta that the new Roman leader has rejected to live up to an old promise made by Rome in the past.
Rome should supply Sparta with gold, but decided to don't live up to this.

Right now you ask us to trade resources with all delegations present here. But are these delegations to be trusted?"

Then the Spartan looked at the Roman and said, while pointing his finger:

"How can I trust you? We can make trade agreements, live up to these agreements, send our fine resources to Rome, but maybe you then decide to never return the favour."

Then he addressed the other delegates: "I have to warn you!"

Lastly the Spartan addressed the emperor again: "May I ask you one last favour, can we delay this meeting a bit more till our friends, the Koreans, have arrived?"

Impressed with the Spartan's honesty about latest developments with Rome, Asiz thought about an appropriate sequel to this speech. But first of all he had to clarify : "Spartan ambassador, be sure that your Korean allies, just as any other nation who's ambassadors haven't arrived yet are free to join this meeting at any time. They won't be disadvantaged by their longer journey, nor will they be excluded from trade discussions because of the delay of their arrival.

Now I'd like to come to the very important point you have mentionned. Trust. I personally believe that the good will that all of us have shown by coming here is a good start, regardless of what happened in the close past or many decades ago. As far as I know, the roman people have gone through deepgoing political changes recently, and all of us should show patience with the new leadership that tries to adjust to the complex situation of foreign politics. And I hope that this patience will be rewarded by a little bit more responsability on the roman side."
He briefly looked at the roman ambassador who was visibly embarrassed.

"Now, ambassadors, if we could continue where we were... are there any of you who have come with trade-offers to make, or do we have to wait for other nations to arrive for more delegations to arrive for this kind of talk ? You are, of course, welcome to suggest any other topic that may be of interest for all of us."

                    • The Roman ambassador at Meeting (an elderly scholar with a delight in epic poetry) concerned by the rumours circulating about the disquiet among the nations at the recent changes in Rome, seeks audience with the assembled ambassadors and kings.

                      ======

King Alcetas of the Spartans, Great Emperor of the Persians and Ambassadors gathered at Meeting,

The Senate and People of Rome sends greetings.

We understand that the great liberation of the People and Spirit of Rome from the corrupt Senators who for too long oppressed the People (for which may the gods be praised) has caused some disquiet among our neighbours.

We have to insist that those with whom you made deals in the past are no more. Their bones lie scattered in the marshes; their houses burnt; their names erased for ever (for which may the gods be praised). The Roman People were party to none of these agreements and gained no advantage from them - their sons died in recent wars just as your own did. We all suffered from their corrupt regime.

Indeed there are no even any records left in Rome of any deals made in the past (the imperial treasury and record house were sadly burnt during the fighting to eject the corrupt senators).

Honourable neighbours, we urge that you join us in rejoicing that evil has been swept from our land, and in beginning a new prosperous future together. We understand your anxieties, but be assured that the new guardians of Rome and their ambassadors are trustworthy, and the People will honour any agreement they reach. The People cannot accept, however, any suggestion that they are bound by unknown and unverifiable deals agreed by the evil men who once polluted our senate and nation.

                        • The Spartan answered: "Today we make agreements with the current Roman leader, tomorrow he may be dead, killed by his successor, who calls him a cruel leader and a dictator. Of course you claim that we should rejoice over the dead of your predecessor. Every king in the history of earth has danced on the grave of his predecessor. But I have to deal with Rome. And I have nothing to do with the civilians of Rome who should or should not celebrate their new leaders.

Fortunately Sparta is a kingdom. The leadership of Sparta passes from father to son. Alexander was the leader of Sparta, no he is succeeded by his son, Alcetas, who will be succeeded by his son, Perdiccas.

The Spartan leadership can be trusted. Deals made with Sparta will be respected. We have our honour. And apparently the Romans have no honour. They hide behind so called bad leaders of the past. They don't show respect, and apparently lack any knowledge of respect.

Tell me, Roman, is your source of gold important enough to anger Sparta?
Show us respect, like we have shown respect to you."

Saddened by the roman ambassador excluding any possiblity to discuss the previous deals made by Rome, Asiz had to make a point :

"Ambassador, I can undestand that you do not feel related to those who led your people in the past. But simply denying any responsability for what Rome said in the past simply is way too easy for being acceptable. It may not please you, but Rome does have depts, and your refusal of standing for them won't bring any good to your people.

As you said, Romans have died just as Piercians did in the war. But what you fail to see, is that this was Rome's war. Your people fell for their own country. My people were hired, and I think you can imagine how well trained soldiers react if you tell them that they won't be rewarded for what they did. I hope that I have made myself clear.

The depts that Rome does have are far from threatening it's overall economy and I think that if you really wish to proove your good will, you should collaborate with all the nations your predecessors have made deals with.

If you wish to verify what those deals were in detail, you are welcome to visit the libraries in all the Piercian Empire. I can assure that they have not been burned down as yours have.

However, this meeting is not held for expressing threats one to another, so I hope that this can be settled diplomatically, and that we can all move on to another topic quickly.

                            • Wandering the bustling town of Meeting, Vladimir Rus is quite intrigued by all the strange sights and sounds. Speaking to his secretary scribe, Vlad takes dictation:

-This is really something. The Piercians are truly masters of many arts. And admirable are many other nations and their greatness. I must bring with me back knowledge and treaties to make better the lands and people of the Rus.
But I must express concern. So many of the peoples of the world are led by Kings and politics. It seems we are the only people led by merchants and traders... I wonder if this is good or bad. Only time will tell I suppose. I can't wait for more delegations to arrive, so many different people, races and cultures. So great the variations. And the opportunities! With deals made here I can become the wealthiest man in all of Ruskaya Zemlya. And wealth is power....

EDIT: Ozzy has told me that Monday may be better than Sunday, particularly around Midnight BST (11PM GMT/UTC)
