  • hey deity. yeah, you are of course right. I'm not innocent in the matters I bring up. but that doesnt mean I approve of my own behaviour, it is simply a forced response to other players developments. I tend to prefer to play a bit isolationist, playing the manipulator and staying in the shadows, but too often I realize that without steady alliances the tec-blocs will just surpass me totally and I have to act in the same manner. I find tech blocs highly unrealistic and highly unbalancing. if there was any way of doing it I would suggest banning them completely.

    just my 2 cents

    • It probably won't change my gameplay much-my choice of civilization &-later-my choices of Civics & religion are what impact on my behaviour the most. I also think there would be some benefit in having players get RANDOM civs, to avoid obviously gamey choices (you know, automatically going for the Industrious, Financial or Philosophical Civs because the giv you an MP Game advantage!

      • i dont think random civs is a solution, i feel that it adds to the game that you can work out a plan ahead of time and then attempt to implement it. I have considered several different strategies to be used in future diplogames but they are to a certain extent trait specific. and depending on your game strategy those strategies are not necessarily superior. industrious only gives cheap wonders and forges, but it also means spending more production on wonders since you're figuring you're gonna get them anyway, with that same production a non-industrious civ could throw together a lot of soldiers or other useful stuff. financial is without doubt one of the best traits, but only because it is so generally applicable. for a narrow strategy other traits would be more useful, and philosophical is only strong early on, its advantages wearing off with time.

aggressive is vastly useful in MP games, as is Protective, dont underestimate Imperialistic with cheap settlers, or Expansive with cheap workers. creative is decent with strong cultural expansion and cheap libraries, and so on and so forth. the traits are more or less balanced. the clue is to play to the strength of your traits.

I love trying out variations of gameplay, new tactics, new styles, new approaches, and BTS has dozens of viable and effective strategies, you just have to have the imagination to find out what they are. I hardly ever cottage spam anymore cause I find it boring.

Another issue that Nolan mentioned, perhaps Marathon is too hardcore for the vast majority of civ players, I suggest we try a game on Epic and see how it works, regardless it wont take too long and who knows, maybe we'll find it better. I enjoy the long epochs and the slow pace of development. not using units cause they obsolete before you're done building them is in my opinion just dull. that is why we have stuck with Marathon, but tec-blocs tend to propel the game forward so fast that even in Marathon games you'll often find a very short usage span for new technology.

One way to solve this could be the following.
        -No Tech Brokering
-No Announcements of what you are researching
-Full disclosure of all tech trades made
-A good story-based reason for every tech trade.

With those small (the 3 last being trust-based) principles tech whoring, tech-blocs and hyperspeed development may be slowed considerably AND as a result, an Epic speed game might suit us better.
        Just a suggestion.

        • deity mentioned something that I'd like to bring back into the spotlight. the option of changing our timeslot. friday night is extremely bad for me. always has been. likely always will be. too much other stuff going on. pushing the game time some 8 hours or more would work way way better for me. that would for me be saturday morning. more would also work. as long as it is not the weekend nights I can play.

            Absolutely.

            Like I wont pick Portugal

But I better build a few Wonders!

I'm OK with random pick but prefer choices.

Let's say that we all make zero effort to find out who each other is IC and we partake in NO gossip or speculation OOC about who MIGHT be playing such and such a civ etc. In fact I think text can be used as proof for demerit points in ozzy's to be revised points system

                  • Listen guys, forget Epic. With Epic your first city grows in 10 turns or so. In mara it takes 30 turns. Too much difference.

Mara is really the speed of choice for discerning dipl-gamers....

Screw that. No way that the US is going to tell the world they shared a Jet with England until it's been made evident by England using it for a while.

                            That's just ludicrous.

                              • We got a go from the poly admins to get anonymous apolyton accounts!

Don't just start creating accounts though!
This needs to be done in some kind of a format, through Ming. We'll speak about that when we need to do it, in a few weeks (/months).

Most important right now is that the Admins support us! Which is excellent!
