How do you explain the new citizen then? Even if he's a specialist, there still needs to be food in order to create a new citizen....

          • How did you guys get the game running last friday? Did things just work? Many reloads? How was the performance?

Other question: who subbed for me?

              • It took us a bit to get going, like usual, and then there were issues with people dropping (me) but overall it wasn't a bad session.

Unfortunately we couldn't find a sub for you (we tried) so India went AI. The one sub we had - Glohithia - played for Nolan, since she had let us know well ahead of time she would need one.

                  • We need to get hold of some new players. France\Kush needs a replacement and so does Rome if I am not mistaken. And what about England?

                    Ordnung must sein!

I can ask my flatmates. I think some of them might be interested. You've all met fransiski (or played with him) and an old 'poly stalker ThePlagueRat, might be available. Problem with them is reliability. They will likely prioritize drinking over civ on some friday nights.

But I really dont want to have to abandon any civs. I know that a lot of people want Rome gone as moker got ticked off at the whole turn advance problem. otoh I'm not sure if he was really into the diplogame concept. Capo isnt back online yet? and what about old players like nicodamax. would he or others perhaps show interest in taking over a straggling empire? We started with 13 players, we should try to keep as many as possible with us to the end.

                    • I agree that we shouldn't divide up any civs, and should do all we can to find subs for France & Rome. For the record Glohithia will be taking over England.

I can try to contact Capo, but I haven't seen him online in ages. Nico never seems to respond to me, but seems to be too busy for games anymore.

As for Moker, he understood the concept of diplogaming, and has been in many games in the past. He lost a lot in that turn and it wasn't just a temporary stepback, but something that affected all his future strategy for his civ. Rome was a runt civ with neighbors building cities right on his borders, the only way he was going to be competitive in this game was through conquest (and he did have diplo-valid reasons). Considering he only has a brief window to use his powerful UU to his advantage that one turn of AI was very costly to him.

If you were 1 turn away from building a critical wonder, or inventing a critical religion, and the AI takes control for that one turn and you lose the goal you had been working on for some time, you'd be mad too, right?

                          • yes ozzy, I would be mad. but I would try to explain the situation and not fly off the handle. of course someone was very undiplomatic when they said moker didnt belong in the game or whatever, but him leaving didnt exactly help the situation.

I didnt know what the situation was. I only knew that Rome had lost some soldiers. I also figured that Rome was the aggressor and after destroying one chinese city was going on to take more. to me it sounded like a case of laddergaming misplaced. As I was (and still am) completely in the dark about the situation in the area, my judgments were perhaps incorrect, but how was I, or anyone else for that matter to know the severity of the situation when moker only said, "I've lost units, now I cant kill china." that is the message I read. We had gotten the game started and it was working, we didnt want to jinx it. once again, like with deity's techtrade messup, not reloading was a mistake. we should REALLY REALLY take this to heart and be willing to reload if there is a valid reason. However, a valid reason must be given, and explained.

Moker did not argue a good case, he started throwing around accusations and some were thrown at him. when I said that everone should calm down he left. If it had been made clear to me the severity of the situation I would have insisted on a reload as well. As that was not the case then how could I be expected to make the right decision at the time. Moker's decision to leave and NOT come back, even when you tried to convince him that he should only supported my notion that he wasnt interested in the diplopart of the game. if he couldnt crush china he didnt want to play was my impression. It may very well have been wrong, but you have to remember that I dont have any information other than general impressions of what is going on. To me it sounded like Rome was smashing its smaller neighbours with its Praetorians.

I admit that getting angry and leaving is easy when things get a little heated, but he had you to argue his case as well, you were on his side and you WERE in the right. If the two of you had argued his case by shedding more light on the matter, then I believe most people would agree to a reload. However, Moker refused to come back to the negotiation table.

                            • I don't think ozzy or Moker were right.

You can't wait indefinitely for players to show up. We all have a responsibility to keep an eye on the screen the whole time we connect and start playing (1 min breaks max; not 20 min smokos)

We'd just spent a good while getting everyone connected. No game rules were broken and the game was running smoothly. Before we ended the initial turn ozzy spent quite a while trying to raise Moker.

No response from Moker, so ozzy agreed to advance the game play. It might have been one turn we played or even many more...

If we can't get subs AI's are used.

You can't be so precious about the game that we use the time machine wonder to sort out individual issues.

                              Absurd.

In HOTW5 the AI played my whole first session which was crucial to me. But we played on.

When availabilities and other issues screw things up for you as a civ leader, you have to see it as representative or symbolic of real life events changing the course of the game.

As I've said before if I'm not around or have connection issues I'll suffer the consequences.

But here we had the majority of players all hooked up and ready to go. There were no game mechanics issues, simply one of Moker's availability. It was well past start time... we played and we ALL agreed to play, including ozzy. No amount of strategic arguing is going to change my mind on this (just as I accepted my position in HOTW5).

For goodness sakes, it's a game - learn to play with unexpected setbacks, however caused.

                              • It's not as if the AI did any good to India. I concider the entire 6th session to be lost for India. NO PROGRESS at all has been made. What did the AI do?

Anyway, I'll continue to play 8)
I don't have any stories to tell now, no time b/c of the birth and b/c I didn't play. I'll try to pick up next week again, I hope you'll understand.
