I read your other post, Ras, and I love big empires and I would be more than happy to join you in a PBEM game of your choosing as well. I consider myself a noob and it wouldn't hurt for me to get more mp experience under my belt.

We have two openings in HOTW7 - so we need permanent players to take over the Romans and the French/Kushren.

            Please step on up.

I'm totally new, I'm interested in the HOTW7 campaign. What are the leaders of the two civs you want players for?
Let me know how/where to get started.

              Thanks

My last post in this thread was over a year ago. HOTW7 is finished. We are onto HOTWXI now. They are always in need of subs. Volunteer here: http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...hreadid=170271

                        • good to see people interested in the next game. We'll answer any questions you have and gladly welcome you.

in summary, diplogames are highly sophisticated games where storytelling and roleplaying (immersion) is very important aspects. for instance, sneak attacks are considered extremely bad form. a reason is required. the reason may be quite irrational as long as you announce it.

we use a separate story thread to make these stories and respond to eachothers'. it gets quite intense at times.

one issue you must be warned about is that the games are played weekly over a long timespan. Marathon game speed. it can take anything from 3-6 months.

I gathered as much by reading some of the story threads.

I am interested about a few things:
What does the game feel like exactly vs. the way it seems in the story thread?
How many hours does an average weekly session take?

                            • usually around 3 - 3.5 hours per session.

ingame you play as usual, MP simultaneous turn, just normal MP. but it tends to take a bit of a while since people are often conducting diplomacy during their turns. likely you'll see "TURN!!" quite a few times in chat during those hours, but it is considered good form to announce that you will be diploing, AND make your deals in normal direct chat (whisper) while playing and then opening the diploscreen to complete them as fast as you can. you can do a lot of writing if you're quick, or queue things up so there's not necessarily so much to do each turn, spend that time diploing, planning, naming all your units, checking the civilopedia, inspecting your cities etc etc. good habits make for faster games, and time extra can be well spent immersing yourself in your civ, or a neighbours...

it feels quite great to actually play. it is exciting, wonders are genuinelly contested builds, as are inventing religions and reaching key techs. as are expansion by settling early on and getting hold of resources. not to mention the nervousness and paranoia that arises when your neighbour starts militarizing, or if you suspect a friendly nation is planning to backstab you. there is a lot of discussion of different sorts going on "behind the scenes", ingame via chats or whispers and out of game via PM's and e-mails. the one marked difference between most other MP games you'll play is the lack of a turn timer. people will nag if you take your time and it is considered polite to finish quickly, especially if a lot of people are waiting. again, if you have some reason for needing longer time, let it be known and people will take cigarette/coffee/toilet breaks. we all try to be very civil and polite.

another issue you should be warned about is technical difficulties. firaxis seems a bit weak on the massive multiplayer longterm game development. a lot of times we can have several hours of technical difficulties, or lacking players because we dont have substitutes or people are simply absent without letting us know. of course this is extremely variable. sometimes we can lose a whole session because of tech stuff and others we can play 3.5 hours without a single glitch. it all is a bit random. minor sacrifices to the god of network games or PC Voodoo are encouraged.

as you have probably figured, patience and politeness are one of the required attributes. sometimes games might turn sour due to ingame stuff seeping outside, or vice verse, but in most cases I believe they have been overcome and we have finished the games without any (or too many) grudges.

If I havent scared you away by this, you are likely a good candidate. our next game will likely start mid-late january.

Thanks for the answers. This sounds like my kind of thing. Even in normal MP I try to get as much interaction with the other players as possible, even though a lot of the people out there are about as responsive to proposals as a bot (this seems true even when it is clearly in their best interest to respond).

You didn’t quite scare me off, even if I am a bit disturbed. Anyhow, if you’ll have me I’d love to join the next game.
