I'll vote for multiple, varied actors doing tech quotes, ala SMAC.

David Tennat(The Doctor on Doctor Who)
Richard Dean Anderson(Although.. it'd be more comedy relief)
George Carlin and Dennis Leary would work relatively cheap, and would both add character to the narration.

I'd vote Patrick Stewart too.. but theres enough of that already

Since Paul Stewart can't be voted for and Laurence Olivier can't be resurrected...

Regis Philbin. Every third word could be shouted.

You would MAKE a ship SAIL against the WINDS and currents BY lighting a BON-FIRE under her DECK?! I have NO time for SUCH nonsense! Gelman, bring me the HOSE!

I voted leonard nimoy, as his voice was what pushed me back into Civ after the travesty that was civ 3

            HOWEVER: James Earl Jones.

            James Earl Jones

No one. I turn off the audio/ wonder movies etc almost immediately.

Sid is fine with me. Firaxis should use the money saved to pay patch programmers.

                  Alan Rickman
                  Ian McLellan

Brian Blessed is the best option on the list

That'd be Ron Perlman, also of "Hell-boy" fame (and much, much more).

                    An excellent choice!

                      • Initially I was thinking it should vary by time era. Then I said, hey, vary it a lot more! The voice could tie to where the tech originally was developed (speaker's accent, use of language), when it was developed, and whether it was a civilized tech or a more "rustic" one (aka hunting). Mix up the male/female. Toss in a few sound effects, like horse whinying for Horseback Riding, during the voice over.

Many good voice actors are relatively unknown, and also relatively cheap, compared to the Big Names. So skip the big names, you can still get quality voice acting without the high price tag.

Then do the same with the leaders. Have one person be the permanent voice, but have their phraseology get more and more civilized over time. Modern Liz would talk different than 3000 BC Liz (but we'd probably still have to deal with the horrid British accent Ok ok, just joking!

                        • It would be nice to bring back some of the talent used in SMAC. Even though they were apparently unknowns (and, according to IMDB, really haven't done much since,) they did a very good job bringing flavor to the game. (I was not, however, as impressed with the SMAX crew. They sounded like they were bored the whole time....I was particularly unimpressed with whoever did the vocals for Sinder Rose.)

If there were a way to bring back Peter Jones to have him do it, I'd be in favor of that as well.

Oh, plus David Ogden Stiers, like I said above.
